Associate Director:Candide, PBSThis was a show that came together at the last minute, Lonny Price directed the stage and television taping, and what a huge talent he is. Kristin Chenowith was radiant in the role of Cunegunda. Walt Disney Concert Hall Inaugural Concert, PBSWhat an honor it was to work as the Associate Director on the opening concerts held in this magnificent new concert hall. Gary Halvorson directed, Alan Wells did a superb job as Technical Director, but the real star was the Hall! From the Metropolitan OperaFor the last ten seasons, I have been the Associate Director for the tapings taking place at the Metropolitan Opera. I have worked with both Directors, Brian Large and Gary Halvorson. Some of these operas include: Don Giovanni, Fidelio, Carmen, La Nozze di Figaro, Tristan und Isolde, Andrea Chenier, Simon Boccanegra, Arabella, Samson et Dalila, Wozzeck and Salome. While most have been taped for later broadcast, there have been two live events.2003 Washington Opera Presents FledermausBrian Large again directed this opera presented at Constitution Hall. It was my last opportunity to work with one of the best cameramen in the business, Jim Covello. He will be missed. Houston Grand Opera's "Little Women" March, 2000 saw the videotaping of this new opera, which was presented on PBS this season. Michael Bronson produced and Brian Large directed. My brother Scott Millard was one of the cameramen. Carnegie Hall Opening 2002Cecilia Bartoli in ItalyThis program was taped in Vicenza, Italy in June, 1998 at the Teatro Olimpico, the oldest covered theater in Europe. Cecilia appeared with Jean-Yves Thibaudet and members of a chamber music ensemble. The program was shown in this country as part of PBS's Pledge programming in December, 1998. Brian Large directed, this was truly a "united nations" event with participants from the US, UK, Netherlands and Italy on the crew! 1998 Washington Opera Presents La RondineIn March, 1998 I was commuting between New York City and Washington DC working on the videotaping of La Rondine, a beautiful Puccini opera, produced by Michael Bronson and directed by Brian Large. Click here to see some pictures of the crew and a rather well-known tenor. 1997 Washington Opera Presents I PagliacciThis program was taped during November, 1997 and aired on PBS sometime towards the end of 1998. It was produced by Michael Bronson as a co-production with WETA, the public television station in Washington, DC. What a pleasure to work with Placido Domingo on this production. He has made such a difference at the Washington Opera as Artistic Director. The television director for this production was Brian Large, who it is always such an honor to work with. 1997 Van Cliburn Piano CompetitionCatherine Tatge, the director, asked me to help her with the performance portion of the Van Cliburn Competition, in the sections when the competitors were playing with the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra. I have known Catherine for years and had most recently worked with her on the videotaping of STILL/HERE in Minneapolis. Louise de la Fuente who was working as the Music Associate and I spent an entire week scripting camera shots for the four cameras since we had to prepare camera treatments even though we didn't know the finalists or which works they would perform! There just wouldn't have been time between when the finalists were announced and their performances. Catherine is a very meticulous director and wanted to be well-prepared for the performance. It was a terrific show, and I had the opportunity to work with my brother Scott Millard for the first time, he was one of the freelance camera operators. 1997 San Francisco Opera Opening GalaSince being damaged in the earthquake a few years earlier, the War Memorial has been undergoing renovation and strengthening. This gala celebrated its return. What a beautiful city is San Francisco. Brian Large directed this program. 1996 May Day Concert Live from St. Petersburg, RussiaMy first trip to Russia was to work as Associate Director on the live telecast to Europe and Japan of the May Day Concert or Europakonzert. Brian Large and I had just finished working on the eight hour live telecast of the James Levine 25th Anniversary Gala at the Metropolitan Opera, when we got on a plane for St. Petersburg, Russia. The Berlin Philharmonic was performing the concert. We stayed for a week afterwards to videotape an opera with the Kirov Opera, Tschaikovsky's Mazeppa. Both this concert and the opera were broadcast and taped in high definition format. What a fascinating place St. Petersburg is. I had a chance to remain for two days touring the Hermitage and the Czar's Palaces. Guiding Light, CBSGL is one of the soaps that I've been working for on and off for 15 years, since they were shooting on 26th Street in Manhattan. Bob Kochman was one of the producers that I most enjoyed working with. It's now shot in the same studio that I worked on The Edge of Night in, on 44th Street. Some of the same crew members still work in that studio. One Life To Live, ABCDuring the week of May 13-17, 2002 "Life Lived Live" by going "live"--no delay--on the air. A great team effort by a terrific production staff headed up by Gary Tomlin, Executive Producer. I was in the Control Room at TV-17 counting us back from our commercial breaks, talking to the ABC Network AD, Leon Sirulnik in TV-6 who was rolling our commercials in. What a perfect ending to the week, as OLTL won Best Drama Emmy for the first time in thirty years. Congratulations, guys! All My Children, ABC"OLTL" and "AMC" are some of the soaps I work on at ABC; Associate Directors work in the studio control room during taping, in the Off-line cutting together the show and bringing it in on time using the Avid off-line editing system. Cameraman credits:Olympic Torch Relay in Times SquareAny time that I get a chance to work with Don Mischer, I'll take it! Britney Spears Onyx Hotel Tour, ShowtimeWhat a pleasure to work in Miami with Hamish Hamilton again, didn't get any "in the house"'s but it was fun nonetheless. Cheers mate! Chris Rock: Never Scared, HBOSomething about working on a show in Washington DC that I really love. This was a good one. Chris rocks. Iron Chef America, Food NetworkI remained in LA following the Academy Awards to work on this show, Mike Simon directed. It is unbelievable the following that this show has, a friend who saw it said to me, "Were you doing handheld on that show??" Yup. And what a couple of fun days those were. Didn't get a chance to sample a single bite of the food. 2004 Daytime Emmy AwardsThe View, ABCWorking with a talented director, Mark Gentile. One of the fastest hours in television, live of course! Super Millionaire, ABCMark Gentile also directs this show, with the incomparable Regis Philbin! The combination of emotion and talent present at Madison Square Garden that night will be fixed in my mind forever. Louis J. Horvitz was the perfect person to be directing this show. His sensitivity and feeling helped the viewer experience much of what it was like to be there. Go out and get the DVD when it comes out. The 53rd Primetime Emmy Awards, CBSThe long delayed show this year finally happened on November 4th with Louis J. Horvitz directing, Jim Tanker the Associate Director; I was working as the closeup camera and loved Barbra Streisand. September, 2001 Jennifer Lopez in Concert in Puerto Rico, NBCHamish Hamilton directed J-Lo's first concert taping. This will a special on NBC in November, 2001. I was delighted to work with Hamish, a very talented director and had a ball following J-Lo around in closeup! Tough assignment, but someone has to do it. August, 2001 Madonna In Concert, HBOAnother live concert with Madonna, directed by Hamish Hamilton. With Rod the vision mixer and Haley his AD, Hamish has developed a formidable directing team! Cheers to all the Brits who came over to work on the show! 2000 Kennedy Center Honors, CBS (17 years)1979 was the first time that I worked on the Honors, having worked for Don Mischer who I had met while he was directing Barbara Walters Specials. He was directing and asked me to join the crew, I was one of very few East Coast camera operators to work on the show, since most of the operators were flown in from Los Angeles. Don now produces the show, and Louis J. Horvitz directs it. Don Mischer is THE class act in television and commands a huge amount of respect in this business, and deserves it.July, 2000 'NSync In Concert, HBOWow! What a trip to be in the middle of thousands of screaming teenage girls for this live concert on HBO. One thing's for sure, there have never been longer camera conferences for a show than this show! Marty Callner directed, with the talented Alan Kartun as his Associate Director. 2001 Tony AwardsGlenn Weiss directed this year's broadcast. 2001 Daytime Emmy Awards2000 Tony AwardsPaul Miller directed, and that number for Contact! was one of the most difficult live numbers that I've ever seen; what an awesome AD Christine Clark Bradley is! 2000 Daytime Emmy AwardsApril, 2000 Gloria Estefan In Concert, CBSThis concert was shot at the Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas to launch her Caribbean Soul album. She is such a professional, and a great talent. Marty Callner directed, it was the first time that I've had a chance to work with him. 72nd Academy Awards, March, 2000The technical crew on this show was nominated for an Emmy for the work we did. Never have I worked on such a complex technical show, with the unique use of video columns using software designed for this application. Although another show won, there is no doubt in my mind that the team should have received more recognition. 1999 51st Primetime Emmy AwardsSeptember, 1999 Back to Los Angeles for one of my favorite award shows, with Lou Horvitz directing again. First Annual Gospel Music FestivalShot on location in Raleigh, North Carolina and New Orleans over the summer, Lou Horvitz directed. Disney Young Musicians Concert, Lincoln Center, New YorkJune, 1999 Dwight Hemion directed. An American Celebration at Ford's TheaterJune, 1999 Hard on the heels of the Tony Awards I found myself down in Washington DC working with Paul Miller directing again. The show airs on ABC July 29th. My favorite performer? Diana Krall, of course! 1999 Tony AwardsJune, 1999 Paul Miller directed this year's Tony Awards, with Christine Clark Bradley as his Associate Director and they did a great job. Bill Philbin and I ran the center cameras and talk about a busy show! 1999 Daytime Emmy AwardsMay, 1999 So finally, "La Luce" won her Emmy. Lou Horvitz directed with Alan Kartun as his AD. Nice job guys! 1999 Essence AwardsThis was my first Essence Awards show, Lou Horvitz directed, Jim Tanker was his Associate Director (click here for picture). 1999 People's Choice AwardsI was pleased to be asked by Lou to join the team in Los Angeles for this live show, produced by Walter Miller. One of the highlights happened after the show was off the air, and a large cake was produced to celebrate Walter's 50th Anniversary in television. 1998 50th Primetime Emmy AwardsWhat can you say? The memory of Lou winning the Emmy for his direction of the 1998 Academy Awards will stay with me for a long time. This was a massive show, which at four hours in length was longer than the Academy Awards! Don Mischer did such a great job producing it. I'm proud to be on the team. I ran the camera shooting the podiums, which is such a fun one to do, because you're always busy, and you're shooting people who are really happy since they just won! The Goodwill Games Opening CelebrationThis two hour live broadcast on TBS was an on location special starring Natalie Cole and a host of other stars including Ray Charles and Hootie and the Blowfish. I worked Camera 4, the closeup camera. Ron de Moraes did a super job directing for Tall Pony Productions. An Evening of Stars: Boyz II MenShot on location in the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, in June, 1998, part of this concert will be seen during the United Negro College Telethon, nationally broadcast later. Louis J. directed this taping. If you want good Mexican food in Indianapolis visit Don Pablo's on West 38th. The manager was nice enough to call me a cab to go back downtown, the ride was more expensive than the dinner! 1998 Daytime Emmy AwardsThe live broadcast on NBC went pretty well, I really like working on live shows, the energy is quite different from the taped shows. Susan Lucci didn't win...again but it was great working with Louis J. again, nobody can call the shots on that kind of show better than he in my humble opinion. Alan Kartun did a great job as Associate Director too. I took a couple of behind-the-scenes shots inside the remote truck as well as a group picture of the camera crew, or at least most of them, click here to see them. Burt Bacharach...one amazing nightThis was a special taped in April, 1998 at the Manhattan Center for broadcast on Turner Network Television, on April 15, 1998. Lauren Harris directed for Tall Pony Productions. Click here for some behind-the-scenes pictures. The 1998 Academy AwardsThis was the first opportunity that I have had to work on the Academy Awards show. It really is one of the biggest shows that is done on television. The idea that a billion people are watching the show is daunting if you really think about it, when you're "on the air" you try not to! What a job Louis J. Horvitz did directing this show! I was honored to be a member of his team. Jim Tanker did an excellent job as the Associate Director. My assignment was operating Camera 4, with mostly the head-to-toe shots of Billy Crystal and the other presenters. One of the highlights of the evening was Billy's reaction to Robin Williams winning an Oscar. Another was Ashley Judd as I 'carried' her from her stage left entrance all the way across the stage on a head-to-toe shot that really let you see her dress! Click here for some other behind-the-scene shots from the 70th Annual Academy Awards Show, these pages may take a few minutes to load. 1997 49th Primetime Emmy AwardsIt's always a pleasure to work with Louis J. Horvitz, a very talented director and one who is very loyal to his team. Most of the time Lou has me working as the "tight" camera covering the podiums and other close-ups. Since the cameras are normally at the back of the venue, a long way away from the stage, there is never a dull moment as far as focus is concerned! But working in Lou's World is never dull and always fun! 1997 Daytime Emmy AwardsSince I do a lot of work with soap operas, I always enjoy working on this show because I get to see a lot of friends. The last couple of years it has been done at Radio City Music Hall, a cavernous hall that fits a lot of people inside. We usually have 10-12 cameras covering the action, Charlie Huntley and Manny Rodriguez are some of the best at handheld camera in the aisles covering the nominees and winners. 1997 SuperBowl Half-time ShowWhat a trip THIS was...imagine being sent to New Orleans for three days and working a show that was only 13 minutes long! Everything that you've heard about SuperBowl is probably true...I'll never forget looking down Bourbon Street over a sea of cheeseheads. Lou directed this as well. 1997 US Comedy Arts Festival in AspenI'm just sorry that I wasn't available to go back in 1998, this was a great gig, skiing in the morning, shooting in the afternoon and evening at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen for Moffit-Lee Productions. Debbie Palacio and Paul Miller were two of the directors that I worked with here, doing everything from Dennis Miller to The Rodney Dangerfield Roast 1997 Celebration of American MusicI've worked on two of them, with Louis J. directing, this past one taped in October was my first introduction to Diana Krall who drew a lot of attention! Get one of her CD's if you haven't heard of her, you will soon. Awards:Emmys
