Newton's Method
"Newton's Method" is an application for a PowerPC Macintosh which, using the Newton-Raphson Method, enables you to find the real solutions of f(x) = 0 for a real function f(x). It also acts as a function evaluator to an accuracy of about 15 significant figures. You can enter a wide variety of functions for f(x). Kevin Raner's Equation Compiler, http://www.home.aone.net.au/krs/, translates the function into machine language so the numerical calculation proceeds as rapidly as if the function had been compiled into the application from the source code.
