TUNING

Regular tuning will create a more stable pure sounding piano.

How often should my piano be tuned?

The frequency of tuning for any piano may depend on many factors, but a general standard is 2 times per year.
Tuning stability can depend on temperature, humidity, age of piano and quality of piano.  Temperature and humidity may be the main reason for the instability of a stabile pitch.
Tuning the piano twice a year will be a big step in keeping the piano stable and in tune for longer periods of time.

What is a " Pitch Raise " and why does my piano need one?

A pitch raise is a major adjustment of string tension.  This is necessary if the piano has drifted from standard pitch by a large amount.  When strings need a large correction in tension, the movement of one string will effect other strings around it, so a pitch raise is a " pre tuning " to get all the strings and piano tension close to pitch.  A fine tuning will follow a " pitch raise " to make the necessary small adjustments to leave the piano stable and in tune.

Tuning aurally or with a tuning device?

It is my opinon that the best answer to this question is " yes ".  Both methods have their place in piano tuning.  Pitch raises are done very well with tuning devices, and tuning with a device can result in a very fine tuning also.
When both methods are used, tuning and aurally checking beat rates and piano temperment, a very fine result can be realized on any size piano.
