A Trip to.. Treasure Island!

On January 4, 2008, Bruce Street School students went to Montclair, New Jersey to see the play, Treasure Island. This production was an adaptation of the1883 adventure novel by Robert Lewis Stevenson. The entire show was performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and spoken English. Bruce Street students were very excited to see the show. They were thrilled to see actresses and actors using sign language on the stage. Each deaf actor had a voice interpreter. The beauty of sign language was combines with the musical score and spoken dialog to produce an amazing theatre experience for our students to see.

Cast members meet and greet the children after each performance, signing autographs and having their pictures taken with new friends from the audience. Therefore, after the show, the Bruce Street students had the opportunity to meet the actors. They were able to ask questions of and take pictures with the actors.

Bruce Street staff and students had a lot of positive things to say about the show. Here are some of their comments:

Kindergarten - They were wonderful!

4th/5th grade - We enjoyed the show very much. It was a wonderful experience to see actors using Sign Language while performing. Other times when we got to see an interpreted show the signers were off to the side and we would have to choose to watch the interpreters or the actors. This way we did not have to choose; we could watch both!

6th grade - The actors and actresses were very funny. They were amazing!

7th grade - The show was awesome! It motivated us to want to see other shows.

8th grade - We were thrilled to see actors and actresses use Sign Language on the stage.
