Michael is very happy and proud to be able to bring these artists together for the first time. Their individual and collective abilities bring depth, beauty and sincerity to any project.
Joe Giardullo: winds; under his leadership the landmark recording Shadow and Light (Drimala), was realized, recorded on September 11th, only hours after the terrorist attack. The Wire describes the event, "To have worked through numbness to this subdued affirmation is really quite extraordinary... and his playing brings to mind Albert Ayler at his most beatific."
Rob Blakeslee: brass; Rob has consistently been recognized by critics and jazz polls as a primary force in this music, rightfully so...
"The northwest's best progressive trumpet player." Village Voice
"His sound is clear, his conception lyric, his technique precise." Downbeat
Billy Mintz: drums; Earshot Jazz has described Billy as a shape shifter; this is certainly true. Read on: "The ever-so-subtle and magnificent Billy Mintz on drums." R.A. Roberts, L.A. Jazz Scene
"...like a mix of Motian and Elvin, he sneaks up on one in a very poetic way." Jason Macnie, Village Voice
Michael Bisio: bass; this quartet represents Michael’s return to a leadership role. His last outing as a leader, Undulations (OmniTone) received a four-star review in Downbeat Magazine. "Part early Ornette mixed with a Mingus sensibility, Bisio's versatile band swings, floats and stirs things up...in the end, while influences are heard, the sound and approach are clearly Bisio's own." -- John Ephland. Frank Rubolino in Cadence writes that "his playing appears to be produced by sorcery."
