1 CONC assigned to Capt. Stephen Lovejoy's Infantry Company, Attached to Lt. Col 

1 CONC Sherwin's Reg of Massachusetts, Militia, in the War of 1812

1 CONT The family moved to Ohio in 1816. (See Aaron Sr's Acct)

1 CONT He married Charity Rood 2 Feb, 1817, in a ceremony presided over by

1 CONC enlisted in the army, in Lebanon, March 31, 1781, servicing one year as a 

1 CONC private in Capt. Ebenezer Deering's Co., Col. Joshua Wentworth's New 

1 CONC Hampshire Regiment.

1 CONT He married Joanna Bickford in Lebanon, on March 9, 1786. They had 12 

1 CONC children beginning with Sarah, born 1786, and to Abigail, born 1810.

1 CONT The family moved, and arrived in Marietta, Ohio on 28 Nov, 1816. They 

1 CONC moved to Morgan Co, Ohio, just north of Marietta soon after. The Morgan 

1 CONC County History states (on page 431)

1 CONT    "Aaron Fall was a Revolutionary soldier who came from New England. 

1 CONC Instead of purchasing land or taking advantage of the law favoring those 

1 CONC who had been in military service, he took a lease of school land and made 

1 CONC his clearing and improvement upon it. His son Moses lived and died in the 

1 CONC township, and his descendants are still here." (1886) 

1 CONT In the 1820 Census Aaron is shown living in Athen's County, Homer Twp., 

1 CONC I830 still there. He applied for a pension in 1832, at the age of 71 in 

1 CONC Athens Co. He is listed in the 1840 Census still in Athens Co, Homer Twp. 

1 CONC The 1840 Census shows Aaron Sr as 90, and Sarah Fall 75. No one else is 

1 CONC listed. 

1 CONT Aaron Fall Sr died July 1, 1852, at 91 years of age.

1 CONT     " Our grandfather, CHARLES McCLELLAND, with his two brothers 

1 CONC Nathaniel and Henry, left their home in Maryland in 1849 to travel by 

1 CONC wagon train to California. Their father had settled in Maryland after 

1 CONC arriving in the U.S. from the area around Glasgow, Scotland,[Since it is 

1 CONC documented Wm. was born in 1791 in Cecil County, Maryland, his father was 

1 CONC probably who Bud referred to as being from Scotland] where for centuries 

1 CONC the McClelland Clan had lived under the protection of the MacNab Tartan. 

1 CONC However the three sons joined the wagons rolling west with family and 

1 CONC belongings. When the wagon reached the Mississippi River in the area of 

1 CONC the present Davenport, Iowa, they encountered semi-disaster making the 

1 CONC crossing. Their loss in cattle, wagons and belongings was so great that 

1 CONC they could not continue.

1 CONT      Being farmers, they took advantage of the Iowa Territory being 

1 CONC opened for settlement and obtained Government land grants in the area of 

1 CONC the confluence of the Des Moines and Racoon Rivers. One of their 

1 CONC enterprises was a soft coal mine out in the present Highland Park area of 

1 CONC Des Moines, near the old McClelland homstead where Henry spent the rest 

1 CONC of his life.

1 CONT      The mine was a successful venture and part of it extended under the 

1 CONC Des Moines River. One night, one of their unfriendly competitors dropped 

1 CONC a dynamite charge into the river and blew a hole so deep in the river 

1 CONC bottom that it flooded the mine. Thus ended the mining by the 

1 CONC McClellands."

1 CONT He was the farmer and raised the good old Iowa corn and hogs and a passal 

1 CONC  of children. 

1 CONT      Upon his death, in 1903, His estate was $200. Probate records show

1 CONT      WILLIAM McCLELLAND died in his home near Des Moines, Iowa, on 

1 CONC January 3, 1872.

1 CONT      He was a native of Cecil County and served an apprenticeship to the 

1 CONC carpenter trade with Lewis Miller, near Elkton. He had completed his 

1 CONC apprenticeship about 1811 and assisted the Rev. John Wilson in building 

1 CONC his woolen factory [and Rev. Wilson's and his own home, both of which 

1 CONC still exist] on Little Elk Creek at New Leeds.

1 CONT      In the War of 1812 he was an officer in Captain William Damsell's 

1 CONC artillery company of the First Maryland Brigade.

1 CONT      He followed his trade in Cecil County until 1850, when he removed to 

1 CONC the state of Iowa.His sons, Joseph and William, had gone to Iowa two or 

1 CONC three years before and taken up Government Land in the fork of the Des 

1 CONC Moines and Raccoon Rivers.

1 CONT      Mr. McClelland followed millwrighting for some years and also served 

1 CONC as Justice of the Peace. When the infirmities of age prevented him from 

1 CONC engaging in active business he retired to his farm in the neighborhood of 

1 CONC Des Moines, where he spent the remainer of his days.  He was a pleasant 

1 CONC and agreeable man, a good mechanic, and had many friends.  He was over 80 

1 CONC years of age and left four sons and three daughters.

1 CONT McCLELLAND, W.-- Mr. McClelland was born in Cecil County, Maryland, 

1 CONC September 3, 1837, where he passed his youth. At twelve years of age he 

1 CONC began an apprenticeship to the trade of carpenter and building.  He 

1 CONC subsequently added to these the trade of millwright.  In 1849 he came to 

1 CONC Des Moines, which was then a mere hamlet, and known as the "Fort". The 

1 CONC country was new and sparsely settled. Mills were few and far between. 

1 CONC Oskaloosa, Fairfield and other equally remote points were the nearest 

1 CONC accessible mills. Mr. McClelland was, therefore, the right man in the 

1 CONC right place, and eleven mills in this an adjoining counties erected by 

1 CONC him attest the fact.  He relates many incidents of those early days of 

1 CONC Polk County and adjoining counties, and has a vivid recollection of the 

1 CONC privations endured by the pioneers. In the winter of 1855-6 he was 

1 CONC building a mill in what is now Greene county, which was then the frontier 

1 CONC of settlements. The weather was severe and the settlers were poorly 

1 CONC protected against its inclemency. Their cabins were rudely constructed 

1 CONC with logs, with puncheon floors. They answered very well in summer, but 

1 CONC in winter there was too much ventilation; very few, if indeed any, 

1 CONC families in that section escaped freezing more or less that winter.  

1 CONC Owing to frequent and contrinued exposure in 1856, Mr. McClelland was 

1 CONC prostrated with rheumatism, and was finally compelled to abandon his 

1 CONC trade, and he has now retired from active business, and is enjoying the 

1 CONC evening of life as pleases him best.

1 CONC Henry McClelland was born in Cecil County, Maryland, June 25, 1834, and 

1 CONC passed to his eternal reward October 8, 1920, age 86 years, 3 months, and 

1 CONC 13 days. He came to Iowa in 1850 at the age if 16 years. He was married 

1 CONC to Margaret Ann Wood, Dec. 4th, 1859. To this union six children were 

1 CONC born, Maria, Elizabeth, William, Edward, Robert and Margaret. Elizabeth, 

1 CONC Edward and Robert survivie him. His wife died seven years ago and his 

1 CONC daughter Margaret just six weeks ago. He also leaves to mourn his loss 

1 CONC three grandchildren, Mrs. John Kirkendall, Mrs. R.L Schoonover, and Miss 

1 CONC Elizabeth Wood, also three great grandchildren, Richard and Dorothy 

1 CONC Schoonover and Mae Kirkendall.

1 CONT        The funeral services of this pioneer of Des Moines were held at 

1 CONC the family home, 4200 Ninth Street, on Sunday afternoon, Oct 10, 1920, by 

1 CONC the Rev. H.W. Hunter, pastor of the Church of Christ, and his remains 

1 CONC were laid in the Pine Hill Cemetery. A large concourse of people were 

1 CONC present at the funeral, among them many people, who like himself, had 

1 CONC come to this county in an early day and by hard work have made their 

1 CONC impression upon its life.

1 CONC there until 1850. He then came to this State with his parents, who first 

1 CONC settled in Des Moines, and in 1859 came to his present location, engaging

1 CONC His farm now consists of 210 acres of well-improved land. His marriage 

1 CONC was in this county, January 31, 1867, to Miss Wealthy Clark, who was born 

1 CONC in New York State and was raised there until she came to this State about 

1 CONC the year 1860. By this union they have two sons and one daughter: Albert, 

1 CONC Gideon, and Sarah. Lost one daughter, Mary E. His father was a native of 

1 CONC Maryland and his mother of England, but she came to this country when she 

1 CONC was a child.

1 CONC "Bud" McClelland writes in a letter in 1965, about his mother: "At age 16 

1 CONC Rose went to London, and went into nurse's training at the West London 

1 CONC Hospital. In the meantime (my father) Alex  McClelland enlisted in the 

1 CONC 51st Iowa Volunteers in July, 1898. This unit was shipped to  to Manilla, 

1 CONC Philippine Islands. He saw action at Ilo Ilo on Dec. 26, 1898, and 

1 CONC returned to Cavite on Jan. 29, 1899. His unit was assigned to the 

1 CONC repression of the Philippines Insurecto's under Aquinaldo at  Culiandi 

1 CONC Church (Mar. 28), Pulilian (Apr. 24), Calumpit (Apr. 28), and Sante Tomas 

1 CONC (May 4). Engagement at San Fernando May 5th until May 26, and final 

1 CONC attack on June 16, 1899. (others mentioned)

1 CONT During his tour of duty, he corresponded with RoseMary Thomas in England. 

1 CONC After he mustered out in Sept 1899, he went to work for the Gov't as a 

1 CONC civil employee in the Quartermaster Corps. He continued to correspond, 

1 CONC and she accepted his proposal of marriage by mail.

1 CONT RoseMary completed her training and did nursing work in the slums of 

1 CONC London. She left England on a Spanish mail boat and travelled to Manilla 

1 CONC via the Suez Canal, and married Alex there on Sept. 20, 1904." (See Bud's

1 CONT      The history of Leeds, 5 miles south of the Mason Dixon Line,  begins 

1 CONC with the coming of John Wilson to Cecil County, MD, in 1805. This 

1 CONC enterprising man was born in Idle, Yorkshire, England on August 16, 1767. 

1 CONC Having learned from his father the art of making broadcloth, he left 

1 CONC England July 7, 1803, to seek his fortune in America. After a tiresome 

1 CONC voyage of  74 days, landed in Philadelphia on September 19. His wife 

1 CONC Hannah, and several small children followed him two years later and 

1 CONC arrived in New york, on June 21, 1805.

1 CONT      Mr. Wilson first came to Cecil Co. on March 12, 1805, to inspect the 

1 CONC factory of Cecil Manufacturing Co., which was engaged in the 

1 CONC manufacturing of linen, woolen, and cotton goods. This company had been 

1 CONC organized by Col. Henry Hollingsworth of Elkton, who sold to it a tract 

1 CONC of eight acres of land on Little Elk Creek. The owners erected a 

1 CONC substantial stone factory on the edge of the stream and equipped it with 

1 CONC textile machinery imported from Europe.

1 CONT      This plant is said to be one of the first, if not the very first to 

1 CONC manufacture fine cloth in America. Tradition says the first broadcloth 

1 CONC produced in the mill was presented to Thomas Jefferson and made into a 

1 CONC suit of clothes he wore at his 2nd innaugural. It enjoyed a prosperous 

1 CONC business, especially during the War of 1812. He gave the name of "New 

1 CONC Leeds" in honor of the city Leeds, in England.

1 CONT       Mr. Wilson was preacher of the religious society known in England 

1 CONC as "Independents", and in 1812, built a stone church. This history of 

1 CONC this church is in files. The final remains of Rev. & Mrs. Wilson are in 

1 CONC an unmarked grave in the churchyard there.

1 CONT        The factory was dissolved in 1826 and became a papermill which 

1 CONC operated successfully until its destruction by fire, Jan 11, 1853.

1 CONT        Roger Easton visited the site in 1997, both family  homes ( those 

1 CONC of Rev. Wilson, and William & Sarah McClelland)  built and lived in are 

1 CONC in fine shape situated next to the church yard. There are monuments to 

1 CONC the Church and Sunday School there, and several family stones. The mill's 

1 CONC foundation is still visible on the banks of Elk Creek, though now behind 

1 CONC gated walls of a private estate. Easton was given permission to explore 

1 CONC same and has photos.

1 CONT       A memorial dedication took place November 7, 1954. Newspaper 

1 CONC clippings, photos, etc. are in files. Cecil Co. Historical Society has

1 CONC 5, 1852. Her sons, the Revs. Joseph and John G. Wilson, preached funeral

1 CONT                        Mrs. Wilson is survived by the following children:

1 CONT     Rev. Joseph, was a Presbyterian Minister. He was pastor of Forest 

1 CONC church in Middletown, Delaware, and principal of Middletown Academy. He 

1 CONC died at Orange, N.J. on May 1 1878, in his 82nd year.

1 CONT     William V. Wilson was a farmer and later a storekeeper at Blue Ball.  

1 CONC He removed to Philadelphia about 1845 and died there on March 21, 1879, 

1 CONC aged 73 years.

1 CONT     The Rev. John G. Wilson was born at New Leeds in 1809. He joined the 

1 CONC Methodist Protestant Conference and was pastor of a church in Frankford, 

1 CONC PA. 

1 CONT     Hannah, the oldest daughter, married John Brown.

1 CONT     Martha was born in Leeds, England, on March 30, 1802. She married 

1 CONC Jacob Price, and died in Philadelphia on February 5, 1880. She is buried 

1 CONC in New Leeds Cemetery.

1 CONT     Sarah, organized the first Sunday School in Cecil County.

1 CONT     Elizabeth died in the Almshouse on June 8 1857, and was buried in New 

1 CONC Leeds Cemetery the following day.

1 CONT Mr. Day died very suddenly, as he had never been ill in  his life. He had 

1 CONC complained slightly of a pain in his arm, but it soon passed away after 

1 CONC his daughter, Mrs. Harvey had given it attention. But she had harly left 

1 CONC him when she heard him fall. Prompt assistance was of no avail and he was 

1 CONC dead in a few minutes.

1 CONT He was one of the oldest settlers in Polk county. He was a justice of the 

1 CONC peace in Lee township in 1873. His wife died in Des Moines in 1859. Three 

1 CONC sons and three daughters, with their children, of which there are many, 

1 CONC survive. The sons are Joseph, of Douglas township; Quincy, of Colorado, 

1 CONC and Wesley of Saylor township. The daughters are Ellen, wife of Charles 

1 CONC McClelland, also of Saylor township; Wilda, wife of David Jefferies of 

1 CONC Grimes, and Mrs. Lydia Harvey, a widow with whom he lived. The funeral 

1 CONC will take place from Wesley church, to whose membership he had belonged 

1 CONC for more than a third of a century, on Sunday at 10:30

1 CONT       He united in marriage with Miss Minerva A. Dailey, October 25, 

1 CONC 1860, since which time they have enjoyed a pleasant home on the northeast 

1 CONC part of the original Dailey homestead.

1 CONT       He was identified with the educational interests of Saylor Twp. and 

1 CONC for the past 35 years has been a director of the independent district of 

1 CONC Center, which has developed the little country school into the commodius 

1 CONC and beautiful Oak Park building.

1 CONT     Mr. Day was always a staunch Republican, enthusiastic over party 

1 CONC successes and deeply interested in every publich improvement.

1 CONT     For many years he occupied various positions of trust in Saylor Twp. 

1 CONC Sunday morning, February 15, 1903, at 4 o'clock, after a protracted 

1 CONC illness but with little sufferisng, he passed away at the age of 65 

1 CONC years, 5 months, and 20 days. Beside the bereft companion, four of their 

1 CONC nine children and twelve grand children survive him. Mrs. John Bowen of 

1 CONC Ridgedale, Mrs. J.B. Cline and J.E. Day of Highland Park, and L.N. Day, 

1 CONC Pstor of the Evangelical Church at Green Mountain, Iowa. Two brothers and 

1 CONC two sisters are also living. Short appropriate services were held at the 

1 CONC family residence aby Rev. J.F. Yerger and Rev. J.H. Yaggy of the Oak Park 

1 CONC Evangelical Church. He was connected with Park lodge K. of P. No. 388 in 

1 CONC which he held the position of K.R. and S. The order furnished the pall 

1 CONC bearers and read their impressive service at the grave. The remains were 

1 CONC laid to rest in the Saylor cemetery.

1 CONT Mr. Day was one of the most well known mem in Highland Park and all who 

1 CONC knew him were well acquainted with his kind and cheery disposition. He 

1 CONC was a prominent member of the Oak Park Evangelical Church. In connection 

1 CONC with that church he was class leader, steward, trustee and a Sunday 

1 CONC school teacher. He was employed as janitor of the Oak Park High School, 

1 CONC which position he had held for the past two years, the janitor preceding 

1 CONC him having died. He leaves a wife, son and daughter.

1 CONC 18, 1792. She died November 30, 1870 of her son-in-law, Samuel M. Talley.

1 CONC in the yard of the Brandywine Baptist Church, Route 1, Chadd's Ford, 

1 CONC Deleware County, Pennsylvania.

1 CONT She was married 27 Sept., 1810, to Joseph Wood Day, son of Joseph and 

1 CONC Elizabeth (Wood) Day. Her older sister, Mary, was the wife of Joseph

1 CONT William Aldred was 12th of 13 children of Wiliam Aldred and Sarah 

1 CONC (Ashton?). When at the age of 23, William Aldred married Catherine 

1 CONC Robinson, who was 3 months his senior, he was a member of the ancient

1 CONT At age 34, they made the journey to America. William was a Methodist, and 

1 CONC objected to paying taxes to the Church of England, and he was more 

1 CONC liberal than those in power in England.  Whatever motivated them to 

1 CONC emigrate, they left Liverpool August 26, 1794, with children John, Lydia, 

1 CONC Mary, and Ellen (Helen) on the ship Pennsylvania. They landed in 

1 CONC Philadelphia on October 17.

1 CONC The Day family is one of the older ones in Brandywine Hundred. John 

1 CONC (Francis) Day, the grandfather of John and Joseph Wood Day, was born in 

1 CONC England. About 1780 he emigrated to America and purachased 160 acres of 

1 CONC the Rockland Tract from an English land company (See NB). He died there 

1 CONC and is buried in Chadd's Ford. His son Joseph, father of John and Joseph 

1 CONC Wood Day, inherited the original tract and in 1798, erected near 

1 CONC Talleyville, a stone dwelling. The homestead, known as Rockland Manor, 

1 CONC was the birthplace of all ten of the children of Joseph Wood and Helen 

1 CONC (Aldred) Day.

1 CONC John Heard was a master carpenter. His age is unknown, but his wife was 

1 CONC born in 1628. 

1 CONT In 1647, John was fined for calling Edward Godfrey, Governor of York 

1 CONC County, Maine, "Old Knave". (Much is written of Godfrey in Noyes, 

1 CONC "Dictionary of ME & NH". John was also in trouble for criticizing Cpt. 

1 CONC Champernowne. (his genealogy is in Heard File)

1 CONT John was fined 30 June, 1647 for speaking against him. In October of 

1 CONC 1650, John was sued by Wither's attny for burning a house. Judgment was 

1 CONC for John to rebuild the house. It is thought he burned it because after 

1 CONC building it, he was not paid. 

1 CONT In 1650 John Heard was living on Champernowne's Island in Kittery, and 

1 CONC was buying lands in York.  His deed from a Mr. Hook, 18 July 1650, states 

1 CONC he had already built and fenced there. He had left York in June 1648 when 

1 CONC he sold his York home to John Parker, carpenter, of Marblehead, but was 

1 CONC back again in 1651.

1 CONT In Dover, NH, where he was permanently settled by 1654, he was much 

1 CONC relied on by Major Waldren. John Heard's "mark" on legal papers was a

1 CONC received his B.A.  14 November 1614. He was a teacher and curate at 

1 CONC Colyton, co. Devon, then became rector and  vicar of Northleigh, Diocese 

1 CONC of Exeter co. Devon, from 1621 until 1632, when he retired to Crewkerne, 

1 CONC co. Somerset, his family home, and became interested in emigration to New 

1 CONC England. He gathered his company of over 100 persons from the 

1 CONC country-side about Crewkerne, and they sailed from the nearby port of 

1 CONC Weymouth in the spring of 1635, the passenger list being dated March 20,

1 CONC Richard Otis was a blacksmith, an inhabitant of Boston in May of 1655, 

1 CONC but settled at Dover, where he had a grant of land before that year was 

1 CONC out. 

1 CONT He was not in sympathy with the established church and was often in court 

1 CONC for absence. He administered the estate of William Lemon in 1662, and of 

1 CONC James Heard in 1667. He admitted the Masonian claims and agreed to pay 

1 CONC ground rent for his lands in 1683

1 CONT His first wife was Rose Stoughton, daughter of Anthony Stoughton, a 

1 CONC strong Puritan who had come to Boston with her kinsmen, Israel Stoughton. 

1 CONC She died before 5 November 1677, when he had married Shuah (Starbuck) 

1 CONC Heard on whose 1st husband's estate he administered. His 3rd wife was 

1 CONC Grizzel Warren, married about 1685. On the night of 28 June 1689, his 

1 CONC garrison was attacked by Indians, admitted by treachery, and he was

1 CONC three grandchildren were taken captive. Three older daughters were taken
