The picture you see here is an oil portrait, hand painted on bleached wood. It is not a photo transfer of some sort. I used artists' oil paint and a tiny brush. The wood used here is walnut, which is a dark wood. On a light colored wood, it would stand out even more.

These are the photographs I used as reference for this portrait.
I charge $30 per square inch for paintings on gunstocks. This oval measures 3.2 inches by 3.9 inches. That equals 10 square inches, so I charged $300 for this painting. This one is surrounded by carving, but a painting can stand alone, or have a painted or carved frame.

After bleaching the oval, I put one coat of a linseed oil based gunstock finish on it. Then I painted the portrait with brown artists' oil paint, which is also linseed oil based. After the painting dried, I put multiple coats of the gunstock finish and gun wax on top of the painting to protect it. The painting will last as long as the rest of the finish of the gun lasts.
