Clan MacVicar Crest

1. M' Vicar Crest is listed in "Crests of Great Britain and Ireland, James Fairbairn of Edinburgh, 2nd Edition, Page 314, Plate 67, Crest 4".

2. Our family and its branches predates any reference with the Naughten's.  There is clear documentation dating from the 8th century to land grants, baronies, and chieftainships associated with the Arthur's and Campbell's.  On the Isle of North Uist Temple Bhiocair and Lord of the Isle, Donnald claim the Vicar.

3. One document that I have a copy of written by Lord Argyle in 1936, based upon his research, attaches our family, the Campbell's, and the Arthur's to the ancient Clan O'Duibhne.

4. Gaelic writings and 3rd and 4th Century Roman references suggest that the Viccar Clan predated Christianity in Scotland.

5. This similarity of Anglo translations and the title of Vicar in the Catholic and the post reformation Church may result in some confusion relating to the family name and the progenitors.  Further, in many references we are described as the Clan of the Eagle? In Irish and Danish mythology there is a lore of the Eagle.

6. Our family and the various spellings thereof, accept the Eagle and Fairbairn's historical findings.

7. It is our position that the failure to provide complete and authentic history on our most ancient name has something to do with the Lyon's initial date of Coat of Arms registration from the early 1600's.  Also, we have documentation of the drowning of our Chief in 1567 by Campbell of Lochawe which precludes the swearing of loyalty to the King shortly there after by the Highland Chiefs.  There are arms registered in Lyon's Court dated 1777 for McVicker and in Ireland for Vicar.  Both of these Arms are stylized for the specific family and their crest.

I hope this information is of use to your firm in providing us with a badge to be used by our family.

Aye, Virgil J. McVicker
