Harrison Ford as Dutch Van Den Broeck, Kristin Scott Thomas as Kay Chandler, Charles Dutton as Alcee, Bonnie Hunt as Wendy Judd, Dennis Haysbert as Detective George Beaufort, Sydney Pollack as Carl Broman, Richard Jenkins as Truman Trainor, Paul Guilfoyle as Dick Montoya, Susanna Thompson as Peyton Van Den Broeck, Peter Coyote as Cullen Chandler, Dylan Baker as Richard Judd, Lynne Thigpen as Phyllis Bonaparte, Susan Floyd as Molly Roll, Bill Cobbs as Marvin, Kate Mara as Jessica Chandler.
Random Hearts starts very slowly, focusing on two couples starting their busy lives. Dutch is an internal affairs cop in D C. His wife, Peyton, is off to Miami to over see the shoot of a catalog for Saks. Meanwhile, Kay, a congresswoman from New Hampshire, is hearing news of a threat to her re-election. Her husband, Cullen, a Lawyer, is off to New York.
We follow Dutch and his partner investigating a pair of crooked cops. In the background various TV sets are showing a plane crash. Dutch calls the airlines to see if his wife is aboard the flight, however, they have no record of her on any flight. This leads him to follow up and find his wife. He finds that she was listed as Mrs. Cullen Chandler. Dutch had no clue that his marriage was in trouble. He seeks out Kay, who does not want to address the issue of her husband's infidelity. She explains that she has a daughter, Jessica, who would be hurt by the knowledge of her father's escapade. Dutch explains that all he wants to find out, is the point where his marriage became a lie! Kay reluctantly follows Dutch on the trail of the ill fated trip, and of course, the inevitable happens.
The film is for romantics, others need not see this. The acting is superb and demonstrates the versatility of Harrison Ford. Some scenes in this film seem staged, the Miami hotel lobby is one of them. It detracts from the flow of the film. But, this film is about two people who are dumbfounded by this episode in their lives, who try to give it some meaning.
I give it 3 out of 5 ear rings:
