Bowfinger

9/2/99

Bowfinger stars Steve Martin as Bowfinger, Eddie Murphy as Kit Ramsey/Jiff Ramsey, Heather Graham as Daisy, Christine Baranski as Carol, Jamie Kennedy as Dave, Adam Alexi-Malle as Afrim, Kohl Sudduth as Slater, Robert Downey Jr. as Jerry Renfro, Barry Newman as Kit's Agent, Terence Stamp as Terry Stricter.

Bowfinger is a film maker who has found a good script. He now needs to get funding. He arranges to have lunch near a table of film producer, Jerry Renfro. Bowfinger overhears that Jerry Renfro will back any film starring action hero star, Kit Ramsey. Bowfinger pretends to be talking to Kit on a cell phone so that Jerry Renfro will back his film. Now all that's left is for Bowfinger to get Kit. He plots a scheme to shoot the film without the knowledge of Kit. He tells the other actors that Kit is shy and only does one take on everything. Kit, who is suffering from too much success, is paranoid and seeks the help of a Scientology like guru. The Bowfinger film is an alien invasion movie. As actors approach Kit spouting lines for the film and acting as aliens, Kit's paranoia increases.

Bowfinger is a film written by Steve Martin for Steve Martin and for the indulgence of Steve Martin. The rest of us get some of the inside Hollywood jokes, but not all of them. This film is the film makers' version of LA Story. The acting is good. The film does not have very memorable scenes or funny lines. It has some funny bits, but a vast wasteland lies in between them.

I give it 2 out of 5 Yugos:
