A Day At The Ballgame
Jenny and her friend Carol sat down in the 13th row of the right field bleachers
They came to the game because their moms went shopping and they didn’t like zoos and the art institute was closed
Three years ago when Jenny was twelve her dad had shown her how to score a ballgame
She bought a score card now, but after an inning and a half she left it blank
Cause there was so much stuff she had to do
Carol bought four hot dogs and smeared mustard on the inside of the buns
Stale white buns
Jenny flagged down a vendor and with a straight face said” Two beers”
He said “ID. ” She had no ID
After drinking three coca colas, Jenny said, “Carol, save my place, I’ve gotta pee”
She asked a man where the ladies room was but he steered her wrong and she wound up quite embarrassed
A real cute guy starting talking to her and she told him that her ID was at home
You should have seen Carol’s face when Jenny returned to her seat with an Old Style in each hand
Carol started laughing when the other people in right field yelled, “Left field sucks, left field sucks”
Jenny bought some Cracker Jack and got a water soluble tattoo of a bumblebee
And put in on her knee
Carol sighed, “This game is dull,” then looked around the stands for her ideal man
She stared at a well tanned blonde haired fellow as Pete Rose stole home plate to tie the score
Three straight singles sent the pitcher packing then Jenny noticed her high school ring was gone
For nine minutes all of the 13th row searched til she said “Oh sorry it’s in the car”
Both girls got up and sang “Take me out to the ball game” for the seventh inning stretch
Then they stretched
Earlier they laughed when the national anthem was sung off tune with a big vibrato, vibrato
With two out and none on in the eight Ryne Sandberg smacked a homer deep to right
It hit three feet from Jenny and she screamed and spilled her beer in Carol’s lap
The beer was warm because the sun was out and day was hot and cause Jenny really didn’t like beer
Jenny wiped the beer off Carol’s lap and the two old gentleman to their left who were making bets on every pitch careened their necks around so they could watch
In the 10th inning Leon Durham took one swing of the bat and sent the faithful home
Game’s over, go home
Carol tied her sweater around her waist to cover her pants that were still wet
And the two girls left
And the ball park closed
