H. P. Lovecraft as Abdul Alhazred
Dec. 2006
Pastel on paper
About 3.9 x 3.1 in. (10 x 8 cm)

I painted this small portrait as a Christmas present to my pen-pal in Austria. I had originally made a bigger version of the portrait, but it was ruined when I tried to spray-fix it. Pastel is a very difficult medium to send in the mail, and I had to come up with an inexpensive way to pack it securely: Double matting it in an empty CD case and mummifying the whole thing in layers of bubble-wrap worked very well. Now I'll need to come up with something else when I need to send much bigger pastel pieces!

Abdul Alhazred is a character created by weird stories writer H. P. Lovecraft. Abdul Alhazred was also H. P. Lovecraft's childhood pseudonym, so it only seemed natural to paint the author as his own character. I used cool colors to create a moonlit-desert sort of atmosphere.

Who has it now?:  A.D.
