An Introduction to Nawal el Saadawi

Nawal el Saadawi has authored over thirty books, including the intense novel Woman at Point Zero and the groundbreaking nonfiction work The Hidden Face of Eve. Her most recent is the autobiographical Daughter of Isis, published by Zed Books in 1999.

Dr. el Saadawi has endured much harrassment for her outspokenness, including death threats from religious fundamentalists, dismissal from various medical posts, and imprisonment under Anwar Sadat.

A vigorous opponent of female circumcision, Dr. el Saadawi has also contributed to the Report on United States War Crimes Against Iraq by former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark and others, and served on a mission to bring medical aid to Iraq in defiance of U.S. sanctions. She is currently active in the Egyptian Women's Union, which has been declared illegal by a top government official.
