Nawal el Saadawi has authored over thirty books, including the intense
novel Woman at Point Zero and the groundbreaking nonfiction
work The Hidden Face of Eve. Her most recent is the autobiographical
Daughter of Isis, published by Zed Books in 1999.
Dr. el Saadawi has endured much harrassment for her outspokenness, including death
threats from religious fundamentalists, dismissal from various
medical posts, and imprisonment under Anwar Sadat.
A vigorous opponent of female circumcision, Dr. el Saadawi has also
contributed to the Report on United States War Crimes Against Iraq
by former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark and others, and served
on a mission to bring medical aid to Iraq in defiance of U.S. sanctions.
She is currently active in the Egyptian Women's Union, which has been
declared illegal by a top government official.
