MacMillan is a musician and writer who thinks of poetry as a much
underestimated form of music. She believes strongly in the spirituality
of
art, and considers performance po8ry to be the canvas for the fusion
of the body and the things we can't always see or touch.
Her
new book, Shallow Empire (Lethe Press),
is the next logical step after a series of chapbook publications
from Doublebunny Press. She has been published in numerous anthologies,
including the 1995 Bottomdog Coffeehouse Poetry Anthology
and Manic D Press's, Poetry Slam: The Competitive Art of Performance
Poetry, as well as publication in 2X4, Poetry Fly,
and The Boston Poet.
She
has competed on four National Poetry Slam teams for Worcester, MA,
including the championship finalist team in 1997 at CT, and has
completed two novels, the most recent, Chrysanthemum,
currently being serialized on GotPoetry.com.
She has her BA in Russian Literature from Ohio State University.
Sou lives in Worcester with her husband and son, where she plays
in an acoustic band called Daily Mouse.

Praise
for Shallow Empire
In these poems, Sou MacMillan scribes an empire as
open as a freeway, as vulnerable as a heartbeat, as promising as
an open door, inevitable as a meadow's overgrowth. They'll capture
and transport you like a favorite song playing on someone else's
car radio as it drives down the street, leaving you on the sidewalk
grinning remember when, forgetting your keys to the now are in your
hand. She's what you meant to say, what you might have forgotten
was so powerful.

Sou
MacMillian has tapped into the current that blazes through language
and crafted work that is unapologetic and fiercely lyrical. With
their unerring visuals and stark narrative, the poems in Shallow
Empire are like snippets of cinema-lush, startling and ultimately
unforgettable.

More than any poet I know, Sou roars in whispers. Her haunting
poetry reveals the profundity of mundane experiences, reminding
readers that lyricism can be found in cigarette stains and unfinished
letters that are often more complete than the relationships they
implicate. Sou’s words remind me that an errant echo is simply
a reminder that some proclamation has lost its path. Finally,
after conquering the world of performance poetry, Sou’s lush
whispers have been awarded the monument of ink and paper they so
richly deserve.
