HAVANA IS WAITING - Cherry Lane Theatre, Michael Garces, dir. BEN BRANTLEY, NEW YORK TIMES "The physical production
is first rate with a carribean pastel tinged set (Troy Hourie) that summons a sense of both luxurious beauty and seediness,
of physical immediacy and cloud gathering abstraction."
WAITING FOR GODOT, Classical Theatre of Harlem, Chris McElroen, director. - NEIL GENZLINGER- NEW YORK TIMES.
"So familiar is Beckett's lone tree on an empty stage that when the curtain opens, it takes a moment to decipher
what you're looking at. The tree is there, all right, but the playing surface is what looks like the roof of a ruined, sunken
house, and it's surrounded by water. Real, waist deep water. Entrances here are made by wading in, or occasionally a raft.
It's a startling vision (Troy Hourie designed the set), and though hurricane relief was almost certainly not on Beckett's
agenda when he wrote the play, the recent history of New Orleans certainly comes to mind."
MOTHER COURAGE, Classical Theatre of Harlem, Chris McElroen, dir. GORDON COX. NEWSDAY. "The versatile set by Troy
Hourie infiltrates every corner of the playing space, surrounding the audience with its dusty battlefield severity. Hourie
imagines Mother Courage's cart as a mini-trailer that cleverly splits open. At centre stage is a turntable on which the enduring
Courage rolls on, on, on."
WESTSIDE STORY, Syracuse Stage, Tony Salatino, dir. JAMES MACKILLOP, SYRACUSE NEWSTIMES. "Troy Hourie's set, with the
battered but ominous sign, "Caution, Watch Your Step," has more of the grit and danger of New York City streets
than film director Robert Wise found on location."
THE PASSION OF FRIDA KAHLO - ArcLight Theatre, Michael Garces, dir. ANITA GATES, NEW YORK TIMES "But that is only one of
the many successes in this nicely balanced production: Troy Hourie's attractive set, O'Donnell's gorgeous costumes, Williams'
effective lighting... combine to create impressive mood setting theatre."
ELEANOR - Ford's Theatre, Washington, Lisa Portes, dir. WILLIAM TRIPPLETT, THE WASHINGTON POST, "Troy Hourie's set, a massive
open framework set against a white backdrop on which photographic scenes are projected, rightly emphasizes the larger than
life sense of history that looms over the action."
THE MAGIC FLUTE - The Music Academy of the West, Chris Mattaliano, dir. GREG HETTMANSBERGER, SANTA BARBARA PRESS, " In collaboration
with Troy Hourie, Mattaliano juxtaposed the innocently playful with sinister sexuality. All the stage craft is to be commended
for its effectiveness."
TOP GIRLS - The Guthrie Theatre, Casey Stangl, dir. DOMINIC PAPATOLA, ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, "The first act dinner party
scene is a true coup de theatre. It's realized immaculately in Troy Hourie's kitchy set - cool metal cubes offset by images
of Barbra Streisand, Gloria Steinem, and other notable women."
THROW PITCHFORK - The New York Theatre Workshop, Lenora Pace, dir. BRUCE WEBER, NEW YORK TIMES, ""Throw Pitchfork," however,
has something far more powerful driving it than an ordinary "here I am, here's where I came from" story. The iconic paintings
featured in Troy Hourie's set indicate the colorful shards of the family dynamic Mr. Thomas is out to describe."
