The single best English language news periodical is the Economist - it is expensive but worth the cost. It is also available in the library, as are the newspapers above and others. The best overall English language newspaper is the Financial Times -also expensive and available in the library.

With the internet it is now possible to follow the news from multiple perspectives, especially if you can read another language or languages. Most countries also have English language editions of their major newspapers and periodicals. It can be a very enlightening experience to read about the same event from several perspectives.
Awareness of multiple perspectives and ideological bias will make you a more sophisticated reader. All news sources are biased in some way. The more you can become aware of this, the more truly informed you will be.
