DR. FRANK BIASCO writes:
Are there any more plank owners (original crew) alive and on email? If so, i would certainly like to communicate with you. As Ralph Sutton has said, there are not too many of us around anymore. In fact, I am now 73 and that is the youngest you can be and still have been in World War Two--unless you misrepresented your age when you enlisted. That's because I was 17 when I enlisted on my 17th birthday on January 15th, 1945(the youngest age possible) and it was 1945--the last year of the war. And we are now dying off fast--although I am still working full time--at least for another two years--will quit at 75. So, let's keep the light burning--for the WW II veterans.
Does anyone, in the original crew, remember how the ship backed all the way out of the slip and rammed into the dock across the waterway. It pulled out to go on a trial run--either before or after we were commissioned. What were the details to that? I was a radarman second class at the time.

Joe Booth writes:
I arrived as a Seaman's Apprentice approx 9/63, and entered the Deck force. I mustered out approx 5/65 from Key West, as an SK3. My most graphic memory was the refueling from hell. That was when we lost steering [fortunatly, away from the oiler], and stretched the oil hoses 'til they sang, and finally gave, spraying oil all over the LT.
Anyone else remember this?
Joe Booth

I served aboard the LT from Oct 69 to the day she left for Vietnam around Aug 70. I was one of the many electricians, an EM2. The LT was stationed in Newport, RI and was transfered to Pearl Harbor in the Spring of 70. Joe E. Johnson (EM2) and I were responsible for liberating the too large soup spoons from Newport to Pearl. There was the time all the electricians put in for Captains Mast because the EXO restricted all of us. I'd like to hear from any of the electricians that I served with. Thomas Fitzsimmons for RICHARD PASSERINO:
I served on the USS Cony DD 508, and the USS Purvis DD 709 from 66 through 69.
My friend Richard Passerino was an EM-3 on the Thomas 63 to 66. Guys he remembers are Jerry Eckret EM-2, Dudly Moore EM-1, Phil Mingolla unknown rate. Rich lived in the Bronx, New York, and sang backup on the ship's do'op group. Ritchie Ghazarin was the lead singer. He remembers singing at the Officer's Club in Mombassa, a port in Africa. Don't know if we spelled everyone's name correctly, hopefully it's close enough.
Incidentally, he's married and living in south Florida. The geek doesn't have a computer, yet. Anyone remember Richard, let me know and I'll pass it on.

Tom Acey writes:
Was on board The L.T. September 1961 until September 1962, I came aboard while the Thomas was in the Brooklyn Navy yard and spent about a month in the barracks before moving on board. I came on board with Abare, Piazza, Dunn, Gardnick, Williams and some of the other names escapes me, after all, it has been almost 45 years?
I spent about one month in the after a general and then went on to the After Fire Room where I stayed for eight months until I went to the IC Gang, three of which were spent mess cooking with Abare and a guy from Massachusetts, his name escapes me. What I remember about my time on the mess decks was one afternoon Abare and the kid from Massachusetts and I went to empty the garbage over the fantail after the word was passed to stay clear of top side decks but being foolish we went anyway and were almost swept overboard. The only thing that saved as was Abare was able to hold on an anchor himself to the flag pole and we all held each other and escaped being washed overboard.
I left LT and went to a school and then went to A.F. 56. The last time I saw DD 764 was in 1964 in the Caribbean when she pulled alongside the ship I was on. Any one remember me?

Mark Crosbie writes:
Does anyone remember? On the first WesPac cruise "69-70, we were up and down the firing line and we got a mission to deliver a small Austrailian Special Forces group "Up River" where many believe a destroyer should never go. Shipmates remember the mission but the date or especially the "Name" of the river goes unanswerd and I need the info badly.
So far the decklogs archive has not proved helpful, probably because of the wrong dates.
Thanks guys and smooth sailings.

I served on aboard the LLOYD THOMAS from spring of 1957 to fall of 1959, as MM3/C. Went to the Med. and through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea. I remember it was so hot that awnings were put up so you could walk on deck with out burning your feet. I stood throttle watch, and it was 137 degrees in the engine room, because the exhaust blowers were out.

Richard Dutton
Anyone remember a time on gunnery practice, and the plane towing the sleeve, cut it loose, and the LT ran over it and sucked the rope up into the scoop injecter pump, and we were up for about a day and a half with no sleep fixing it.
Another thing. Does anyone remember the dates when we went through the Suez Canal, into the Red Sea? It was a Med cruse.
