Nineteen pairs of Least Terns nested on Stratton in 2005, the first recorded nesting of the species on any island in Maine.  The terns have returned in 2006 forming a colony of 103 nests.  A mile and a half off Old Orchard and monitored by Project Puffin staff, Stratton Island offers this endangered species a safe haven from crowded mainland beaches and from predators such as fox and raccoons.
