Memory
Multiplies Meaning
The 2008 calendar
year is a year in which we celebrate a milestone at St. John Lutheran Church. Our sanctuary turns 100 years old on January
12. This is the third building used for worship by our congregation, which will be 138 years old. It is a beautiful sanctuary,
which helps us focus upon the wonders of the Almighty. Also, our school will be 135 years old.
Our history reveals a past which is committed to serve the one, true, holy God: Father, Son, and Spirit. I pray that
our memory of St. John Lutheran Church and School always includes the grace of God in our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Remembering His goodness helps us to understand our purpose in this life, not just
in our church and school, but also in our everyday family activity, friendships, work, and play. We have been blessed so that others may also be blessed with the gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord, and spared the misery of hell, which has been deserved by every sinner. The
memory of our own sins drives us to the cross for comfort, because God’s grace is multiplied to us. He brings forgiveness, life and salvation.
Christ’s
church is not simply a building. She is the bride of Christ. She is alive in faith and action.
The church is people who work as the one body of Christ, and we are members of Him and of each other. Though our buildings are places where we gather in service and prayer, they are tools, not the outcomes
of our faith. Our God seeks to bless us with His Word, and to sustain us by his
sacraments. He blesses us to encourage and equip others for service in His kingdom,
and to build our hope and confidence in His plans.
It takes courage
to act on faith, when we cannot see the outcomes that God has planned. We envision God’s blessings, and we labor to
serve Him, but we must let God Himself bring the good to His people. We are dependent
upon Him for all which is good that we know and receive. Our meaning as the people of God is defined by what we claim, as
well as by what we do. We trust God to bless these efforts according to His promise: “My word does not return void,
but accomplishes that for which I sent it.” (Is. 55) It is our privilege to serve God as “A family united by faith in Jesus Christ, gathering around God’s Word and sacraments, to reach out in
Christ-borne love and Christ-like concern, in ministry to each other and those without Christ”
We mean to serve
our God. We desire His goodness as the driving force in our lives. We seek to trust His mercy, and live by faith in His goodness. Our memory of His blessings leads us to
deny ourselves, and to take up our cross and follow Him. May God help us to serve Him, and bring His good to bear in the lives
of all our members and community!
Many thanks to everyone involved for all the reports which follow. They show many aspects of our congregational
life during the past year. We are active in faith, yet also and reveal that we
are not yet perfected in service to our Lord. I pray that these memories of the past year may also encourage us to offer our
very best to the Lord in the coming year at St. John Lutheran Church.
Blessings in Christ! Pastor Grimm
