One of the more popular images from "Return to Route 66" is the Dog on Route 66 near Miami, Oklahoma 1993. This surviving, ten-mile stretch of the original Route 66 is known as the Sidewalk Highway. In 1926, it was paved just nine feet wide enough space for a Moon Roadster or a friendly farm dog. This is one of the book’s most popular postcard images.

Some of the other attractions include: Gemini Giant at Wilmington, IL; Big Boy at St. Louis, MO; Coral Court Motel at St. Louis, MO; Graffiti Bridge near Riverton, KS; Big Blue Whale at Catoosa, OK; U-Drop-Inn in Shamrock, TX; Cadillac Ranch near Amarillo, TX; Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, NM; Jack Rabbit Trading Post at Joseph City, AZ; Oatman Road in Oatman, AZ; and more!

Return to Route 66:
Photographs from the Mother Road

This exhibition of 66 black and white and color photographs describes a journey that details the history of Route 66 and is the current project of photographer Shellee Graham.

This exhibit is a chronology of Route 66 and a tribute to timeless movement and to the people who live and work on its edges.

Route 66 was stamped on the American public's consciousness in 1926. That was the year the fabled highway was christened. Through the decades this remarkable road has been celebrated in song and literature. Route 66 became an escape route for Dust Bowl pilgrims, a thorough-fare for troop convoys bound for war and the most popular highway in the country for droves of tourists.

A ribbon that tied the nation together, Route 66 concrete and asphalt pavement snaked across eight states. It was known as America's Main Street. It still is.
