1995Record: 11-6, NFC West champions
The defense ranked No. 1 in the NFL, leading the league in scoring defense, while setting team records for fewest rushing yards allowed (1,061) and fewest rushing yards per game (66.3). The defense forced 34 takeaways, including a team-record seven that resulted in TDs. Six members of the defense made it to the Pro Bowl. Despite a career year from Jerry Rice (122 receptions for 1,848 yards and 15 touchdowns), the offense was hampered by several losses: Quarterback Steve Young missed five games with a shoulder injury. Fullback William Floyd's season ended with a knee injury in Game 8. Running back Ricky Watters left via free agency, and offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan became the head coach at Denver. A highlight of the season came in Dallas in Game 10. The 49ers entered the game hobbled and humbled. The defending Super Bowl champions were only 5-4 and were facing an 8-1 Cowboys team. Backup QB Elvis Grbac was filling in for Young. But the 49ers' masterful game plan created mismatches, and the 49ers took advantage of Cowboys turnovers to cruise to a 38-20 win. The 49ers' victory over their old nemesis was the start of a six-game winning streak. The 49ers would encounter a new nemesis in the playoffs, however, as the Green Bay Packers' swarming defense forced four turnovers in beating the Niners 27-17. The Seifert Era continues: 1996 |
