From: fpm9944@ix.netcom.com (Frances Morrison)

Hi!-
really enjoyed these pages - WELL DONE!
one small correction, George Doherty JOHNSTON (note the "t") was my
gr-great half-uncle and his name was NOT Johnson (although a
frequently-made error!) - perhaps you'd like to put an "error correction"
note the correct spelling!?
Unfortunately, my great-grandfather (Lt. Henry Yarbrough Weissinger), who
served as his half-brother's adjutant, is not listed, but such is life!?
(FYI - both these men were from Perry Co. AL)

I note you used the AL Dept. of Archives as your source - do you know if
they have other regiments from AL, ESP the rooster of the 28th AL? as
well as the 25th? - I've just gotten a new scanner and am anxious to try
it out with something useful, but have had trouble tracking down the full
complement of soldiers, Private to General - most of the generally
published sources confine themselves to officiers! (hmph!)

in any case, enjoyed your page - thanks for posting!
sincerely,
Frances Morrison

From: MilnerG@bek.com (Milner, Glenn)

Sir:

Words fail me. Your 25th Alabama home page is exactly what the web should be
used for! On behalf of my maternal great, great, great grandfather, Private
John R. Taylor, Company F, 25th Regiment Alabama Volunteers, I thank you.
Private Taylor gave all on June 27, 1863 when he died of disease in Atlanta
Medical College Hospital. He left behind a wife (Louisa) and 7 children in
Randolph County near Wedowee after only 6 months in the army. Please add his
name to your roster of Company F. References available for Private John (R.)

Also, there was a Private Calvin J.C. Munroe who served in Company G.
I have a photograph of him in uniform that I got from a descendant in Texas.
Can you display scanned photos on your page? If so, I will call that fellow
in Texas and ask his permission to display Private Munroe's photo on the web.
Let me know if you want me to pursue this. Thanks again for your efforts.

Wonderfull...Thats all I can say... I've been searching for a long time for
anything on the 25th...and I've found it !!! thanks to you...I thank you, and
my family thanks you...WELL DONE!!!

My relative in the 25th was my GGGG uncle Lt. Jonathan Stout, Regimental
Adjutant, I noticed that his name is incorrect in the roster....
I have a lot of information on him, very briefly: he was wounded 3 times,
Murfreesbor, Tn. in the leg...Atlanta...in the right shoulder...Franklin, Tn.
the left shoulder, which put him out of the war...after the war he became a
minister and served the church in SC. .....if you would like, I can send more
details of this and more...... he was also mentioned in the O.R. for his actions
at Shiloh.. If you would like this information ..please let me know...again...
Thanks for this wonderfull history..you are to be commended sir!!!!

P.S. I also know what happened to General McClellans Sword... he is a distant
cousin... its a good story in itself...

From: Cindy Hale-Morrow Bray

My ancestor was Micajah R Mullins. He was in the Wesobulga Pioneers.
July 21, 1860 (2nd Corporal) along with his brother, Martin V Mullins, 2nd Lt.
The Wesobulga Pioneers were pretty much the basis of Co F in the 25th.

He officially enlisted in the CSA on October 19, 1861 at Wesobulga, AL and
served in Co F, 25th AL Infantry Regiment. He worked his way up through the
ranks and was eventually made 2nd Lt by Gen Bragg May 9, 1862. He died at
Tazewell, TN November 30, 1862.

The dates for most of your sources for those in the 25th were after the date of
his death so I understand why he might not be listed. I have copies of his
service cards if you need to see them. I would like for him to be listed as he
not only served but lost his life in the service of the 25th.

Thanks for your time and interest in returning my query. If I can be of
further help in the recognition of Micajah's service, please let me know.

Keep up the great work. I'll revisit the new site address.

Cindy

Subj: John Nelson 25th Alabama Co. K

From: Chuck

Hi Steven,

My name is Charles Uren, my Great Grandfather was Elisha Nelson. I have not
proved as yet that he was the Elisha in Co. B of 25th Al. but his brother was
John Clifford Nelson of Co. K born 10 May 1847 and died 24 June 1918. These
dates taken from his headstone at Shell Banks Cemetery in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The roster list his age as 32.

I have not found Elisha's grave to see if he has a Conf. Headstone, but have
been told by distant relatives that he served in the Civil War. Elisha died in
Biloxi, Miss. but his body was sent to Mobile, Al. for burial.

Thanks for the information and the Web site dedicated to the 25th.

Chuck!!!!

Hi Steven-

Thank you for presenting such a great web page. I have correction for your
roster of Company F from Randolph County, AL. You list Pvt. Berry Bairch, the
correct spelling of the last name is Burch. Berry's brother, James Ceburn Burch
was also a private in Company F and is listed on rosters as "J.C. Burch".

Another brother, Tom also served but I have yet to locate his service record.
I am expecting to receive Berry's military records soon and will provide
additional information when I get it. In the meantime, please accept these
corrections.

Thanks again!

Hello,

I noted in your website that you do not have my gg grandfather listed in the
25th Alabama Infantry, Company B. His name was James McCain Compton, listed as
James M. Compton. (you have a James M. Capps) He enlisted 12/21/1861 at
Pensacola, FL. He was in the battle of Shiloh, Farmington, Chicamauga and
Murfeesboro. He was captured 11/25/1863 at Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge,
TN. and transferred to Rock Island Prison, IL. He was released in Louisiana
5/23/1865. He went on to enroll into what is now Tulane University and received
his Doctor of Medicine in 1872.

It was a miracle that he survived all those battles and prison and he deserves
to be listed among his peers.

Sincerely,
Sheri Stoyanoff

Are you aware his name was Wilson Parks Howell not William Howell?

The descendants of Wilson Parks Howell have the Howell Family history which
he wrote before he died. He also wrote some on the family history of the
Parker Family. He married Harriet Virginia Parker. It is in a narrative type
form.

Steve, I can put you in contact with some of the descendants of Wilson Parks
Howell if you like. Let me know if you get this information.

Well done!

I have a comment concerning the "Additional Sources" section. I believe the
comments made by Union Army Capt. Page is incorrect due to typos (Yours or more
likely, Confederate Veteran magazine). To my knowledge, the only Alabama
outfit which ever guarded prisoners at Andersonville was the 26th Alabama, and
that took place for a brief period in May 1864 before the 26th was transferred
from the ANV to the AoT and Cantey's brigade. My belief is further supported by
the fact that the skirmish at Liberty Mills, VA took place in September 1863,
not '64, which would place Capt. Page at Andersonville in the right time frame.

Dear Mr. Driskell,

The AJ Callahan listed as a second lieutenant in Company F of the 25th Alabama
is Andrew J Callahan of Randolph Co., Alabama. He was my great-great-uncle and
the son of William J Callahan and Harriet Oslin, originally of Georgia.

Lieut. Callahan was wounded near Griffin, Georgia. The family received word
that he was recovering, but on 5 August 1864, he died in the Courthouse Hospital
in Griffin, of tetanus. He lies buried in Stonewall Confederate Cemetery in
Griffin, Georgia.

Dear Mr. Driskell,

I am just beginning my genealogy research on my maternal grandmother's side of
the family. My mother's family hails from Cleborn County Alabama. I had a sit
down talk with my mother recently. According to her, her grandfather's name was
Jerrimiah (Jerry) Kighten and he was killed at the battle of Shiloh, Tenn.
before her grandmother, Anne Knighten, was born. I went on Ancestry.com and
searched for the records. I came across two that might be my ancestor from
there:

#1. Pvt. J.J. Knighten, Company I 25th Alabama Inf.
#2. Sgt. J.E. Knighten, Company E 23rd Alabama Inf.

There are many other Knightens found serving in various units from Ala, but only
these two with the first initial of "J". I was wondering if you've ever come
across anything on a Pvt. J. Knighten? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely
Graylin Smith

Subj: 25th Alabama Infantry Regiment...
Date: 6/8/2003 11:00:58 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From: "Russ Marsh"

Steven,

My name is Russ Marsh and I am interested in the 25th Alabama Infantry Regiment.
Specifically, my wife's 3rd great grandfather was James Monroe Taylor and served
briefly in Company H before disappearing off the face of the earth on July 28,
'63. How can this happen to a perfectly good soldier?

Which leads to my question: Where was Company H on July 28, 1863? And what
might have happened to James M. Taylor?

We have a note that says he did not show up for roll call on the 28th and was
reported to have been sent to the hospital. His wife later says he died of
disease but we are only assuming that his death was associated with the incident
of the 28th. What hospital might this have been?

Can you refer us to some sources that may enlighten us?

Thanks,
Russ and Rhonda Marsh

From: Susan Mack

Just saw your site on the 25th. This is a wonderful site. I have been putting
together "stories" of the Mack family based on their activities and where they
were at specific times. Ezra R. Mack (2nd son of John Christopher Mack)in Co. K
died at Murfreesboro Jan. 28, 1862 from wounds received during that battle.
What I thought would be more interesting to you is that Ezra was married to
Charlotte Driskell. Ezra's older brother (John Bishop Mack) was married to her
sister Sara Driskell. Their father was Allen Driskell and mother was Ferreby
"Francis" Wren.

Ezra's wife Charlotte and children continued to live in the Mobile, AL area near
her parents. John Christopher Mack had moved the rest of his family to LA in
1849 including John Bishop Mack and his new bride Sara Driskell. We are
descended from John Bishop Mack who served in 9th LA Batt. Co. B. Other
brothers George C. Mack also served as did William Mack. William died at
Vicksburg.

We had two other relatives wounded at Murfreesboro, one Confederate and one
Union. Never thought I would learn so much about such a little known battle of
the Civil War. Again, thanks for the work you put into this site.

Susan D. Mack,
Denham Springs, LA

Subj: William P. Howell History on the Web
Date: Sat, 5 Nov 2005 11:47:15 AM EST
From: Perry Allen

Steven,

I've browsed the Howell history that you edited for the web several times--and
find it rich in historical interest but also very well presented on the web
(http://home.earthlink.net/sdriskell/25th/25th.htm).

I have a colleague who has in his personal (and family) possession an
unpublished diary and several letters of a member of an Illinois regiment, and
I'm trying to find a mechanism for him to make it available to the public. I'm
wondering if you are not only the editor of the history but also the webmaster
of the site, and if this is a fairly do-able (and maintainable) thing.

I suppose he should look for a web developer in the area where he lives.

Interestingly, the Illinois regiment was at Farmington and Corinth in April/May
1862 just as the 25th Alabama was.

Perry Allen

Mr. Driskell,

Thanks for your efforts to share information on the CSA 25th Alabama Infantry.
More and more information about our ancestors is becoming readily available, and
I am very grateful for your resource.

Reportedly, two of my G-G-G uncles served with 25th AL, Co D. However, Thomas
Cotton Bowlin, Jr, and William L. Bowlin are not listed within your online
information. Other online resources say Thomas died March 31st, 1862 in
Corinth. Based on available media, I surmise he died of some illness like
measles, pneumonia, influenza, etc.

One of their brothers, James K. Polk Bowlin, also served but there's been no
ready information on his service, and he's said to have died in Fayetteville,
TN in 1863 (aged 18 or 19).

Thanks again for your great website. I look forward to reading more of
Howell's letters.
