MOVEMENT FOR BELOVED COMMUNITY

Spiritually-Based Community Movements

Spiritually-based community movements involve social action but in a more comprehensive personal and neighborhood-based context. However, there are spiritually-based and comprehensive efforts that involve only one faith. There are movements that are spiritually-based but adopt traditional market-based economic strategies. There are movements that don't consider ecology.

There is one movement that addresses all of the complex issues of our time in a holistic manner. Sarvodaya Shramadana is such an effort. Because they are a multi-faith effort (but, primarily Buddhist), have a comprehensive community development program, are concerned with sustainability issues, emphasize cooperative economics, and their goal is world awakening versus going along with the "market" approach.

We need to learn from them and also create more extensive global networks of such efforts.
