The Movement for Beloved Community on the Web will show how a new global movement is forming. Our dream is the creation of a global network of individuals, villages, neighborhoods, and communities who share a vision of a beloved community--- and want to realize it.
The dream for the Beloved Community is as old as humanity. People from every culture and time throughout history have dreamed of a nonviolent and cooperative society. It has been called by many names. One current name is the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement in Sri Lanka. It translates as the Awakening of All through the Sharing of Labor or Energy. Sarvodaya has applied the idea and principles of universal spirituality with community development to build one of the largest community movements in the world. We will highlight their efforts because their principles are good anywhere.
This site will give many examples of multi-faith social action efforts and will give examples of some spiritually-based community movements. We will cover secular community building efforts as well.
What would a spiritually-based civilization look like? We feel that it would be based on locally-controlled cooperative economics and would be based on a philosophy of sustainability.

Now is the time to consciously develop a new society from the old, a Beloved Community based on love, justice, and fellowship. We can begin with an inner attitude change. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King spoke of an "inner spiritual transformation" to give us strength and could lead to "personal and social transformation."
Our focus is not on blaming--- but on real change. The power to change our lives comes from within us and not outside. We don't have to wait for anyone else. We can start right where we live.
We can work locally, knowing that we are part of a larger global awakening. Humanity is leaving its childhood behind and is growing up. We are witnessing the birth of a new world civilization. The truth is that we are one Spirit, one Earth, one Life, and one People. Every loving act that we perform, no matter how small fosters the awakening of ourselves, our families, then cities, nations, the world, and finally, the entire cosmos. Each day presents opportunities to practice love in action. Everyone can become awakened warriors or Bodhisattvas.
Working together and sharing ourselves, we can build a Beloved Community inside ourselves, with our families, anywhere we live.
