Galaxies are "island universes" similar to our own Milky Way Galaxy. They are the most distant objects from our Earth.
Many of them contain billions of stars. They are thought to have black holes at their center that will eventually consume
them. Our Milky Way Galaxy is no different.

Nebula are clouds of dust and gases located within our own galaxy. Some of these nebula are regions where new stars are
being born. Others are actually created by the explosions of dying stars. The gases in some nebula are hot enough to
produce their own light. Other types of nebula are lit up by nearby stars...like a headlight in the fog.

The moon is that big bright ball that you see on many clear nights. :-) Our moon is about 3000 miles across and is about
250,000 miles away.
Planets orbit the sun the same way that Earth does. On occasion, some of these planets get rather bright in the night
sky. This is because their orbits bring them closer to the Earth.

Now and then the sun ejects some of it's matter into space. If Earth happens to be in the way, the particles interact
with out atmosphere and create a light show know as aurora. These aurora are more common near the Earth's poles.
Meteors are usually small bits of rock that slam into the Earth's atmosphere at speeds of 30 miles per second or faster.
We see them as fast moving streaks across the night sky. Even tiny grains of sand moving at these high speeds can put on quite
a show. Larger rocks can even make it to the Earth's surface.

Comets and asteroids also orbit the sun but they are much smaller than planets. Comets are know for their tails that
are created by gas and dust that is ejected when the comet approaches the sun.
Asteroids are big chunks of rock or iron. Some are as big as mountains. Most of them are in safe orbits between Mars
and Jupiter. Others are wandering around the inner solar system, sometimes approaching our Earth. Over the eons, many comets
and asteroids have hit the Earth with devistating results. many scientists think we are overdue for the next big hit.

Not all clouds are the same. There are several categories of clouds. All types of clouds are capable of producing unusual
shapes. Sunrise and sunset adds the dimension of color. Storms add power and excitment. The sun peeking through the mist or
rain can produce a stunning rainbow. Look up once in a while and let your imagination run wild!
