NAPABA ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF MENTORING COMMITTEE

NAPABA announces the formation of a Mentoring Committee, which will be tasked with forming a NAPABA mentoring program. This program will further serve and benefit NAPABA members in all stages and areas of practice. In addition, NAPABA Partners’ Committee will form its own separate mentoring program for the purpose of mentoring senior associates and partnership-track counsel. (The In House Counsel Committee’s mentoring program will remain status quo.) PAST PALSD PRESIDENT JERRILYN MALANA IS ELECTED SDCBA BOARD PRESIDENT-ELECT

Past PALSD President Jerrilyn Malana was elected 2008 President-Elect of the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA).  Jerri has an extensive history of volunteer service to the SDCBA, the community, and the legal profession.  She has served on the SDCBA’s Board of Directors for two years and currently serves as Secretary on the Executive Committee.

A shareholder at Littler Mendelson, P.C., Jerri has also served as a board member of the Filipino American Lawyers of San Diego and as Regional Governor for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA).  She is also a recipient of the 2007 Trailblazer Award, NAPABA’s highest honor in recognition of the outstanding achievements, commitment and leadership of lawyers who have who have demonstrated vision, courage, and tenacity in their careers, making substantial and lasting contributions to both the Asian Pacific American legal community and the broader Asian Pacific American community. 

In the community, Jerri serves on the boards of the San Diego Opera, Union of Pan Asian Communities (UPAC), and San Diego Asian Film Foundation.  She is also the co-chair of Littler Mendelson's national Diversity Council and has been a key contributor of efforts to increase opportunities for women, attorneys of color, and gays and lesbians within the Firm, Bar, and throughout the legal and business community.

In the 108-year history of the SDCBA, Jerri will be become only the ninth woman, the second lawyer of color, and the first Asian-American to serve as its President when she succeeds Heather Rosing in 2009.

PALSD-ENDORSED CANDIDATES ELIZABETH BALFOUR & MARVIN MIZELL ARE ELECTED TO COUNTY BAR BOARD

The results are in; Elizabeth Balfour and Marvin Mizell are two of the newest members of the San Diego County Bar Association’s Board of Directors.  Marvin has been a member of PALSD for several years and is a Deputy Attorney General in the Criminal Division, Chair of the Ethnic Relations and Diversity Committee of the County Bar, and past president of the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association; Elizabeth is an associate at Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP, co-chairs the Women's Resource Fair for Lawyers Club, was co-chair of the Children at Risk Committee of the County Bar, and won her firm's Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award last year.  Congratulations to both of them.

PALSD Joins Marriage Equality Amicus Brief

The PALSD Board has voted in favor of joining an amicus brief authored by the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area in support of same-sex marriage (California Supreme Court Case No. S147999), which can be viewed here.  The other API organizations that joined in the brief as of Sept. 21 are:
