A controversy over the fate of a number of old growth white pine trees in a portion of the Finger Lakes National Forest arose recently with the designation of these trees as part of a timber sale.

Neighbors of the forest, including professional ecological forester Mike DeMunn and members of a group called Forest Watch, have been trying to work with the Forest Service for years to incorporate values that will protect more of the Forest's old trees and limit activities that might damage the forest.

Mike DeMunn recently put out an alert that galvanized a huge response through emails and phone calls to the Finger Lakes National Forest office in Hector.

On October 26, Mike and others met with Finger Lakes National Forest officials in the woods to discuss the situation.
