SECONDARY MATH TUTORING (SMT)

ARITHMETIC THRU CALCULUS, ANY AGE STUDENT

      Since 1983 Secondary Mathematics Tutoring (SMT) under the direction of Sonya Sokolow, Ph.D., has provided support of mathematics achievement in arithmetic through calculus for students of all ages, children to adults.   Generally, tutoring is done in an office with minimal distractions and on a one-to-one basis at prescheduled appointments evenly spaced throughout the week.  Scheduling is as flexible as possible so that the support will be there for the student when it is needed and so that the tutor can monitor the student's progress in a timely manner.  As needed, the tutor communicates with the student's family, teacher, and/or counselor.  The effectiveness of the tutoring effort is constantly being evaluated by comparing the student's initial goal to present achievement.

     A chart is maintained for each student.   In addition to notes on daily interactions, the chart contains an invoice form on which is recorded the start and end times for each visit.  When the session begins, the time to the nearest 5 minute is recorded.  When the session ends, again the time is recorded to the nearest 5 minute, and the student initials the entry.  Depending upon the deposit received, the invoice is totaled to the nearest 15 minute  and periodically sent home for payment.  There is no charge for appointments canceled with 24-hour notice, but there is a charge for any other canceled or failed appointments.

DIRECTIONS

FEATURES: PRIVATE INSTRUCTION IN PLEASANT SETTING WITH FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING. 
CHARGE: $50 PER HOUR (CHARGED BY THE QUARTER HOUR).  $200 DEPOSIT TO START, WHICH IS APPLIED TOWARD LAST MONTH OF TUTORING.   Before the first tutoring appointment will be booked, the  first appointment fee must be paid.   24-HOUR NOTICE OF CANCELLATION IS REQUIRED, OTHERWISE NO REFUND.
STRUCTURE: A chart is kept for each student ; it contains notes describing what is done during the tutoring sessions, as well as an invoice showing start and end times (to nearest five minute) for each appointment. DIRECTIONS TO THE SOKOLOW HOME

From Mission Street in Santa Cruz, take Bay Street toward the University of California (UCSC) entrance.
Before entering UCSC, at Bay and High Streets, turn left onto High Street.
Go up High Street, pass Western Drive on your left, and
watch for Highview Drive on your left just beyond the dense cluster of two-story houses under construction, and before a large grassy field. 
Highview Drive is small and looks almost like a private driveway.
If you reach the UCSC Arboretum entrance, you missed Highview Drive, so turn around there.
Take Highview Drive westerly.  It dips and curves, then just before it becomes a gravel road, you will see a row of mailboxes on your left.
At that intersection, make a left turn onto Highview Court.  When the road takes another turn to the right, don't turn but rather go straight
ahead to the driveway with the double white gates.  There is a numeric keypad on a post on the left side of the driveway just before the gates.
