
Pvt. Elmos N. Ross

Elmos Nicholas Ross was the son of Reese Gilbert Ross and Susannah Maddox. He was born on March 31, 1839 in Knox Co. OH. in the town of Bladensburg, in Jackson Township. He enlisted in Eden, OH. (which is now a ghost town) on Nov. 23, 1862, by a recruiter named D. Humphrey. After the war he was the Manager of the Mt. Carmel farm. When he became too old to work the farm, the job was passed to his son Gilbert Reese Ross. Elmos married Mary Catherine Barr and lived in Centervillage, Delaware. Co. OH. One book listed him as one of the founders, and Sgt. at arms of the local G.A.R. chapter in Sunbury, OH. Mary Catherine died while the children were still young. They were given to other family members to raise until the were old enough to help out at the Mt. Carmel farm. He lived his last years living with his son Gilbert and family in Johnstown, in Licking Co. OH. He died on Nov. 18, 1917. It is thought that he and his wife are buried in Centervillage, but the cemetary has been badly vandalized over the years. Another report has him buried in Sunbury, OH.
