Pvt. John North
Company F
John North was born April 7, 1834
in Richland County Ohio. His father George North was by trade a
farmer as was John. When he reached
maturity. John married Catherine Davis on the 25th of
September 1858 in Ashland County
Ohio. John and Catherine had three children when John enlisted
in the union army on October 4th,
1862. His enlistment term was for three years. He enlisted at
Mansfield Ohio in Ashland County,
in the 125th O.V.I. Company F and served his country
honorably. During the fall back
from Chickamauga, in front of Missionary Ridge, near Rossville, Sgt. Henry
G. Russell, of Company F was wounded and was in danger of capture. John
picked him up and carried him to safety. It is said that he was bitten
by a rattlesnake after taking care of Sgt. Russell. He received a severe
gunshot wound in the left arm at Resaca, Georgia on May 14th
1864 Following his recovery
he returned to the regiment on Feb. 23, 1865.
John was diagnosed with Hypertrophy
of the heart and discharged on the surgeons certificate of
disability on August 17, 1865.
Following the service, John returned
home and enlarged his family by fathering two more children. He
and Catherine moved to Paulding
County, Ohio and raised their children there. Catherine died on the
15th of March,1886. John remarried
on June 24th 1886 to Elizabeth Brace. She was a widow,
having lost her husband some years
earlier. They had three children from this union. John passed
away at his home near Tipton in
Paulding county on March 10th, 1902.

John was laid to rest in Saylor
Cemetery in Indiana. The cemetery is located by the Maunee River
approximately .2 of a mile from
the Ohio line, just off hwy. 24.
