PVT. MORRIS R. LOWERY (aka Lowry)

      BORN:   Abt. 1847, Athens Co., Ohio  to  Elijah Lowry and Susannah Simonton
 

MILITARY SERVICE:

Pvt. Morris Lowry enlisted 3 December 1863 into the 125th OVI and started for Tennessee, reaching
Chattanooga a week later. On the 14th of January 1864 he joined Co. K of the 125th and the next day marched  for Dandridge, Tenn. During the retreat from Dandridge on the night of the 20th January 1864, Morris  gave out, lay down beside the road and fell asleep. A mule team and wagon came along and
accidentally ran over his chest and abdomen. He was sent to the hospital in Chattanooga. His
military service from then on was spent in and out of hospitals. At one point, he was charged as a deserter, but  later cleared when documents proved he was being transferred to different hospitals during that time and had not deserted.  He did rejoined the 125th and was discharged on the 25th September 1865 at Camp Irwin, Texas. His brother, William S. Lowry, also served with the 125th Ohio

CIVILAN LIFE:

After the war, he returned to Athens Co., Ohio and became a coal miner but because of his health he
could only work half of the time. He applied for pension under #207.791. As part of his application was a
letter written by Regimental Surgeon Henry McHenry. In his letter McHenry describes the conditions
during the retreat from Dandridge. (To see the letter click here) He always claimed that his heart disease
and hernia were caused by the mule team running over him and was awarded a pension based on his injuries.  He moved to Columbus, Ohio and lived there until his death on 7 May 1899.  He is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, Section 41, Grave 1014.

He married Margarett E. Loar on 23 April 1870 in Athens Co., Ohio and the couple had seven children:

John Berton Lowry had a son, John Berton, Jr. who in turn had a daughter, Charlene Rose (married name Gallucci). Her son is  David Berton Gallucci
