BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HALL

Benjamin Franklin Hall served as a private in the 125th Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry which was organized at Camp Cleveland, Ohio under Col. Emerson Opdycke (of Trumbull County).

B.F. Hall enlisted at Vernon, Ohio, as a private on 15 October 1862. His age is listed as 26. ( This jives with his birth date of 21 Sep 1836)

He left his wife, Amelia Brown Hall, 4 year old son, Arthur, and 2 year old son, Frank, behind in Ohio during the war. His father, Squire Hall, had served as an Ensign during the War of 1812.

Private Benjamin Hall fought at the battle of Franklin in Tennessee and participated in the occupation of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Benjamin Hall was wounded on 20 September 1863 during the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. He was struck by a minnie ball in his right hand, during the fighting between Brotherton House and Snodgrass House, probably on the hill at the Snodgrass place. His Company commander, Second Lieutenant Martin V. B. King, was killed and Sergeant Alson Dilley assumed command of Company C.

Private Benjamin Franklin Hall traveled by train to a hospital in Nashville where the little finger of his right hand was amputated on 29 Sep 1863, nine days after he was wounded.

Private Benjamin Franklin Hall was returned to Chattanooga on 16 May 1864 to rejoin his regiment enroute to Adairsville. Upon arriving there, he was detailed to hospital duty by Colonel Stanley, who deemed him incapacitated for infantry field service. Benjamin remained in Chattanooga until his discharge in 1865.

When the civil war ended with Lee's surrender on 10 April 1865, Benjamin Hall was individually mustered out on 28 May 1865 at Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Benjamin's medical experience at the Army Hospital in Chattanooga led him to become a doctor.

In 1865, he was on the pension list rolls of the Cleveland, Ohio agency.

In 1870, he was on the pension list rolls of the Marion, Iowa, agency. In 1876, he acquired 120 acres in Barron County, Wisconsin. In 1883, the Barron County list of pensioners shows him receiving $4.00 monthly for the wound to his right hand. He divorced in Amelia in 1883 and left Wisconsin shortly thereafter. In December of 1887, he married a Nancy Crisp in Lyon County, Kansas. In 1896, he was at the Oklahoma Land Rush. In 1897, he was located at Perry, in the Oklahoma Territory.

Sometime thereafter, he moved to the Greenville, Pennsylvania, about twenty miles from his birth place at nearby Vernon, Ohio.

Dr. Benjamin Franklin Hall died of heart failure on 29 Oct 1904 at Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was buried at the Shenango Cemetery there. His grave is located in the "Old soldier's section", section H, row 8 as listed in "Mercer County Cemetery Inscriptions" Vol. 9, LDS book 974.895 V3d. His marker reads "B.F. Hall d. Oct 31, 1904 age 68y Co. 'C' 125 Ohio Vol.".
