Astronomy: General
If you want to talk Astronomy, this is the place for you. The
list name says it all!
Advice
Those of you that know me, know that I am not big on rules. I
dont expect newbies to e-mail to know what they have yet to learn, but
I do expect them to learn fast. Therefore,
common practice on internet mailing lists will be the norm:
-
you are responsible for everything on the list below
-
except for List Subject lines that contain the word unsubscribe,
administrative requests will have to be sent
to me via e-mail; please be patient
(registered YahooGroups members will be able to do more for themselves)
-
if you are a registered YahooGroups member, check your profilethis list
is open to anybody and everybody on planet Earth
-
also for YahooGroups readers via the web, instead of "No Email", select
"Special Notices"I go through periodically and change them if you don't
do this
-
your subscription will be
moderated until you post a personal bio about yourself
and your involvement in astronomyyou dont have to get too
personal, just on-topic for this list (I will have to approve your bio post
to the list, and
after that, you will be able to freely post to the list,
subject to the advice below)
-
as an alternative to the bio, you can also provide a helpful reply to
a list members post
-
as another alternative to the bio, you can also provide a useful post
to the list
-
no flamingbe nice, respect everybody else (do these things, and there
will be no problems on our list)
-
clip your replies down to the minimum required to convey your point, that is,
dont quote entire messages being replied to, unless you want to
line-by-line address every point
-
dont easily get/go off topic (OT)
-
NO discussion of religion or politics except
where it directly applies to the list subject/name (if you are
unsure of what I mean by directly,
ask me)
-
you can be unsubscribed if your behaviour warrants it
-
use at least a modicum of sense
-
web links are a great way to convey information
-
IF you have a financial interest in a company, you may
NOT drum up business or advertise for that company (it
only makes you and them look bad); you may reply to questions that
directly relate to your product or service; you should use a relevant
tagline if you must have one
General Info
Due to the name of this list, Astronomy: General, I have been
called the General by one or more list members. It was prompted by
one of the first ADMINistrivia posts I did where I signed off as, Leroy
Guatney, Astronomer General (you know, like Attorney General). I
explained that I was once the most experienced Astronomer on a mailing list
for writers of Science Fiction, and I had used that title there.
The likening of the lists name to a hospital has also been made.
As you may have noticed by now, humor is tolerated and
encouraged.
For some reason, there is a heavy Colorado contingent on this list. Please
understand that we are a big, happy group of friends and observers.
