Albums (CDs) with Nelson Eddy and/or Jeanette MacDonald

4/7/99   Edited and commented by Stephanie Loyd.

*Duet with Eddy and MacDonald
#Nelson Eddy Solo or duet with someone else
~Jeanette MacDonald Solo or duet with someone else

General note: Currently, there are many more Nelson-only CDs than Jeanette-only CDs.  Let's face it — Nelson made many more records than Jeanette, about bazillion (bazillion being a technical term).

It should be noted, however, the best CD recordings will not sound like just-recorded material.  One can expect, at best, some small level of noise and a reduced dynamic range than could be expected of a modern recording; that's a side effect of the technology with which these were recorded.  Also, these were all originally mono recordings and that does make a slight difference.  Do bear in mind that, even for the same recording—say the same song from the same radio show—quality can vary widely, depending on the fidelity of the original material (Sony takes special pains with this, which may be why their final product tends to be superior) and the effort made during remastering and digitizing.

Those of you who might have wandered here before will note updates, corrections, and additions.  There are now record label/selection numbers for the CDs supplied  by Tricia Lutz who has also kindly supplied additional information on Jeanette-only CDs and another "Sweetheart"  Jeanette/Eddy CD.  I'm still open to more corrections and/or additions, so if you have any, and especially if you have the data on them, please send it to me, Stephanie Loyd, and I will update this list.

Where to find them. All albums marked with a † can be found at general internet (and other) music stores like Collector's Choice Music and CDNow and Footlight.  Others can only be found at specific places, noted if I know where.

*Will You Remember? - V 9/21/36
Editor's notes/opinions: This is one of the best all-around items, particularly for Nelson fans, with all of the Eddy/MacDonald recorded duets from the 30's plus some outstanding solos from both of them (all Victor).  For Eddy fans, "Señorita" would make it worth your while, but so would "Trees," "Sylvia," "Hills of Home,"... you get the picture. This album is thinner of MacDonald solo material, but "Goodnight" I haven't seen elsewhere, except on Jeanette-only CDs. Nelson fans should avoid reading the cover material, however. It is just plain insulting, and apparently written by someone who hasn't listened to the record.

Editor's notes/opinions: Most of these are Victor recordings, beautifully remastered, really bringing the voices out better than any other CDs with these songs.  There are three Nelson solos from Columbia recordings and one from the Kraft Music Hall, 1948.  These recordings are as clean as they can be found elsewhere. The "Will You Remember?" duet sounds to me their 1957 RCA reunion version. All in all, this is good music, with an attractive cover, put together by Hallmark. The remastering on all the songs was definitely geared to enhancing the voices, and was particularly successfully on the Victor recordings. All the songs can be found on other albums, but this is a nice mix.

Editor's notes/opinions:  Note that this appears to be another version of the RCA "Sweethearts" (see listing below), almost identical except for the addition of "Auf Wiedersehn," "'Neath the Southern Moon" and "Song of Love" and dropping "Drink to Me...".  If you have this already, it may not be worth the trouble.  The individual who provided the info on this says it sounds pretty good.  RCA/BMG generally do sound pretty good, but, if you have the "other" RCA Sweethearts, you might not want to blow the dough on this one.  I'm not sure about the order of the tracks, either.  I didn't find it on the net, but I've been told it can be ordered from Beautiful Music Company for $16.98 CD or cassettes for $12.98.

#Alone Together (w/Gale Sherwood)
Editor's notes/opinions: Nelson-only album, with all 12/60 Everest recordings (except the last, which was recorded in 1964). Nelson was older when he made these recordings, with an excellent voice for an older man, but it is noticeably older. Though he doesn't have the same evenness of tone and incredible breath control that is in some of his earlier recordings, this is work that you generally just can't find anywhere else.  The last duet with Gale Sherwood (uncredited on the album) is particularly good.  The whole album shows off his successful nightclub style without abandoning his love for the classics.

#Why Do I Love You? (w/Jane Powell)
~Beyond the Blue Horizon
Editor's notes/opinions: If you only want the Eddy/MacDonald duets, you are going to be disappointed. However, there is lots of stuff here that I have found on no other CD.  Merrill has a lovely voice.  I found "When You Walk in the Room" delightful, and it has MacDonald singing in her low range, which some might prefer. I have always enjoyed Risë Stevens' voice and I was especially glad to get the clearer versions of solos from "Northwest Outpost" because my commercial video has badly distorted sound. No Ilona Massey, however.  And the "Willie the Whale" bit made this a must-have album for me. (Note that the "extra" songs have notably worse recording quality than the others.)

Editor's notes/opinions:  This is a collection of Christmas music from many different artists including Nelson. If you want Nelson only, stick with the just-out "Songs for Christmas," but this is a pretty good Christmas album, well remastered, with some lovely choral pieces.

~Sweetheart Waltz - V 1/31/45
#Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise - C 8/21/40
~Summer Serenade - V 4/18/46
Editor's notes/opinions:  This CD, divided almost equally between Nelson and Jeanette, contains some good music I haven't seen elsewhere on CD, especially for Jeanette.  There are no duets.  This is strictly solo stuff, mostly 1930's Victor recordings.  As with the liner notes of the CD called "Ah! Sweet Mystery
of Life," which is also put out by Flapper, the opening blurb is denigrating to Nelson Eddy.  It appears to be the same blurb, only edited to make it shorter and marginally less offensive.

†Greatest Hits (Nelson Only)
Sony Music Special Products    A 24298
#Tramp, Tramp, Tramp
#Rose Marie
#The Mounties
#At the Balalaika
#Song of the Volga Boatmen
#Shortnin' Bread
#Stout-Hearted Men
#Lover Come Back to Me
#I'll See You Again
#My Hero (w/Risë Stevens)
#I Married an Angel
Editor's notes/opinions: Nelson-only album, with all Columbia recordings.  This is among the best remastering of any Nelson CD I've heard. "The Mounties" has a sustained tone (the note changes pitch midway, but Nelson never stops to inhale) for more than 19 seconds. An excellent and low-cost album for Nelson fans.  This is one of my all-time favorites.

†In the Still of the Night (Nelson Only)
Laserlight      12 597
Summer in 1948 Kraft Music Hall
#The Great Come and Get It Day
#In the Still of the Night

#Stout-Hearted Men
#June Is Bustin' Out All Over
#Shortnin' Bread
#It's a Grand Night for Singing
#Beyond the Blue Horizon
#Shadrack
Editor's notes/opinions: A Nelson-only album, recorded from radio.  I enjoyed this CD, but it should noted that all of the songs can be found on "Stout-Hearted Men" plus a whole lot more.  I don't remember if the other album includes the same bit in the front of "Shortnin' Bread," that small sample of the running gag that adds a splash to "Make Mine Music" and which was a frequent gag on Nelson's radio shows.  It's on this one, though.

~Beyond the Blue Horizon - V 8/5/30
*Will You Remember? - V 9/21/36
*Farewell to Dreams - V 9/21/36
~Sweetheart Waltz - V 1938
Editor's notes/opinions: Something of a bonanza for Jeanette MacDonald fans, with "The Kerry Dance" which I've not seen elsewhere except on Jeanette-only CDs. The album is rather thin on Nelson solos and has the standard set of Eddy/MacDonald duets. Mostly-Nelson fans will probably prefer other collections.

#Blathazar's Song
#Ave Maria (Schubert)
#The Lord's Prayer
Editor's notes/opinions:   I cannot attest to the quality of these recordings, and it is sometimes pretty chancy to get recordings originating from radio unless you really trust the source.  Some might find Nelson Eddy's Ave Maria particularly tempting as it is a lovely song.  I have not heard nor do I own this CD, so I can't tell you how this CD sounds.  It is still listed on footlight's webpage.

#Oklahoma (ensemble)
Editor's notes/opinions: A Nelson-only album, with all Columbia recordings. If you love this musical, this is the album to have. Nelson's voice is lustrous and remastered in 20 bit sound.  The Sony people did a terrific job of remastering, making the music crystal clear. I normally try not to focus on the sound quality, since it varies widely, but the clarity of the music here makes it really noteworthy. It's as close as I've heard to making Nelson's music sound like it was recorded yesterday.

†Ol' Man River (Nelson Only)
Mac/Eddy Records   JN133
All songs from 1937 Chase and Sanborn Radio Show

#Comedy Skit:  The Big Blow (w/Edgar Bergen and friends)
#Only a Rose
#Shortnin' Bread
#Non Piu Andrai (Italian)
#Carry Me Back to Old Virginny
Editor's notes/opinions: I was leery of this as I had had mixed results in quality with LPs under this label, and have heard similar extreme quality variations carried into their CDs.  I cannot vouch for other CDs under this label, but this one sounded pretty good to me.  There does not appear to be a great deal of post-digitizing clean-up, but the originals are in good shape considering that they are from radio.  And here, again, is music you won't find anywhere else on CD.  Pricey, but I found it worth my while.  I only saw this on Footlight.

Editor's notes/opinions:   Jeanette lovers everywhere rejoice.  I don't have this CD and can't attest to quality, but there are certainly songs here you won't find on any other collection I know of.  I'm told this album was released just a year ago and should be readily available.  It is listed on all three websites sited in the beginning of this page and can probably be ordered from any number of other places.

Editor's notes/opinions:  This is another compilation CD, but what a compilation!  Many a famous name is represented here, including a number of Nelson's singing partners and even Allan Jones.  It should be noted that the Eddy/MacDonald duets of the second disc don't sound like the original Victor recordings, so so I deduce they are from their 1957 reunion album.  I'm not too familiar with those recordings so I could be wrong.  Also, the Eddy songs from the first disc sound like the Columbia recordings to me, though "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise" is a different recording than you'll find on the other CDs.

Editor's notes/opinions: A Nelson-filled album with a few hard-to-find songs and many many old standbyes (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).  Fairly definitive.  Much of the recordings are from the RCA Victor recordings, but some are not, so you've quite a collection.  I cannot attest to the sound quality of this CD, not having heard it myself, but a hard-core fan might want to give it a shot for a few of the gems it contains.  Thanks to Roger Woodroofe for his information.

Editor's notes/opinions:  I want to update my original assessment of this CD.  I played it on a very forgiving system; however, when I played it up against the same songs from Flapper and Hallmark, I was forced to give them the edge.  However, I still give ProArte points for effort, plus, there are some hard-to-find tracks I haven't seen on other CDs, including  "By the Waters of the Minnetonka".  If you have most of the songs, it may not be worth it to you, but I don't regret my purchase.  I only saw this on Footlight.

Editor's notes/opinions:   OK, now I've heard it and my describing it as a bonanza for Jeanette fans is no joke.  This is more than a little gem.  It includes many tracks recorded in the 40's and 1950 and those are a special treat because it seems to me that Jeanette developed a special richness that isn't as evident in the earlier recordings.  Even I was impressed with this album.  I also have to mention the superlative job done by BMG on the remastering of this music; for the 1950 and 1945 music, it rivals even the job done on "Oklahoma", no small feat.  My only complaint is that, once again, the compliments to Jeanette on the cover literature are taken at Nelson's expense.  Even so, if you're a Jeanette fan, you HAVE to have this.  My source tells me that there might be limited quantities of these, so don't delay; if you can get hands on a copy, do so.  If we're lucky, they'll take the cue from the success of Turk's biography and make some more copies of this beautiful record.

Editor's notes/opinions:  This Nelson-only CD is a cornucopia of music from the 1948 Kraft Music Hall.  The recording quality is about what one would expect from old radio shows, but there are songs here not available on any other CD, though not bad. It also includes all the songs from the "In the Still of the Night" CD.

Editor's notes/opinions:  Note that there are two different CDs called "Sweethearts" (see listing below), so check which one you are buying.  Originally, I had to guess about who sang what because either I have never had the songs or I have given away my CD when I discovered I had most of the music elsewhere.
Fortunately, someone has offered corrections, so I hope the list is right now.  Fans of Jeanette might find it worth their while, but Eddy fans can find this music in other collections (except for this version of "Rosalie"). The CD is kind of pricey, too.

Editor's notes/opinions:  Note that there are two different CDs called "Sweethearts" (see listing above), so check which one you are buying.  I've been told that this second "Sweethearts" CD is "better," but, as it contains many of the same songs, I don't know if I could recommend it.  There's very little here that's not on "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," and, if you want more Jeanette, there's more on the other "Sweethearts" CD.

Editor's notes/opinions: Nelson-only album, with a pretty good collection of music.  The blurb in the beginning isn't bad, but still somewhat dismissive if one compared Nelson to a "great singer".  <sigh>  Even so, the album is a well-rounded collection offering some gems not seen elsewhere like a solo "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life", "Ride, Cossack, Ride," "Wanting You" (which I don't think is on another CD) and "Kashmiri Song".  The music is in fairly good shape and an hour+ of Nelson is always welcome with me.

Editor's notes/opinions:  Those who missed Jeanette on "In the Still of the Night," and "Stout-Hearted Men" CDs, might enjoy this one more.  The whole 9/23/48 broadcast is included and an extensive collaborative medley.  You miss out on several songs but you get the lively "Come to the Mardis Gras."  Bear in mind that the radio recordings generally have more noise and distortion than commercial recordings.

A Star Falls from Heaven - Schmidt
The Chanson de Toreador - Lawrence Tibbett
Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes - Booth
Nessun Dorma - Pavarotti
Editor's notes/opinions: This is another compilation album where Nelson is only represented among many, but what company to be keeping!  There are some excellent songs and singers in this collection, as you can surely see, and it is always refreshing to see a compilation of opera-quality male voices that include non-tenors like Tibbett, Chaliapin, Pinza and, of course, Nelson Eddy.  There was obviously a lot of work done to remaster this music, much of it sounding very good (especially since I suspect more than one of these came from acoustic recordings).  I was disappointed in Tibbett since it sounds to my amateur ear as though it was either an on-stage recording or they remastered it with so much reverb that it was distracting.  All in all, though, a very nice album.  And, naturally, I can't help but approve when they have a picture of Nelson on the cover, wedged between Carreras and Pavarotti.  I did find this album at CDNow with an album title search for "World's Greatest Male Voices" and definitely worth the $6.

For those who are interested, I have also started cleaning up music of Nelson Eddy.  I do not charge for the music or the work I took in digitizing these and putting them on CD, but only the materials of the CD itself ($2 + postage).  I am not and will not sell them commercially since I don't own the music, but this is music that can be had elsewhere on tape, from other collectors, that I have digitized and (hopefully) cleaned out some of the background noise.  They can be had at cost to anyone who loves to hear Nelson sing, taking note that I can give no firm date on when I can get them to anyone, since, if I don't have copies at hand, I have to find I time to clean stuff off my computer to load these songs back on and make CDs.  To date, I have only two CDs completed (it is A LOT of work to do these) including the following songs:

Nelson Eddy Classics I
#Ave Maria
#Danny Boy
#Danse Macabre (French)
#Serenade (German - Schubert)
#La Ci Darem La Man (Italian w/DK)
#Largo al Factotem (Italian)

#Sunup to Sundown
#Chanson de Toreador (French)
#Serenade (German self-accompanied in an auditorium)
#Bali Hai
#This Nearly Was Mine
#Some Enchanted Evening
#Younger Than Springtime
Editors notes/opinions:  I love the music on this, which should suprise no one.  The quality varies widely, generally because of the sources.  The source material for "Bali Hai", "This Nearly Was Mine", "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger Than Springtime" was not only bad (and with several dead spots), but required speed changes as did Largo Al Factotem.  No promises, but I hope I've helped some of these recordings, taking note that I concentrated entirely on the voice, so the improvements--if any--on the accompaniment is purely coincidental.

Editors notes/opinions:  These are comedy skits from radio (and TV?)  and feature a number of famous people:  Charlie McCarthy/Edgar Bergen, Frank Sinatra, Frank Morgan, George and Gracie Burns, Jeanette MacDonald, the Andrew Sisters, Ida Lapino and the list goes on.  Quality varied widely on these, but some sound pretty good considering.

Editors notes/opinions:  The quality varies widely, generally because of the sources, several of them, again, requiring speed changes.  Despite herculean effort (and three separate tries), the Boris Godonov piece never did sound good.  Other pieces, however, I was able to do away with an astonishing quantity of needle noise at, I hope, little or no cost to the voices.  No promises, but I hope I've helped some of these recordings, taking note that I concentrated entirely on the voice, so the improvements--if any--on the accompaniment is purely coincidental.
