Dear Kevin DelGobbo,
You're nice to offer to be out class pen pal. We support you. We
are proud and surprised that you never missed a vote last year. Your job is great. You are cool and special.
Are you ready for our questions?
How is your job? Do you know about the show Between the Lions on
PBS? You look pretty young. How old are you really? How do you know that there is a vote going on at the capitol? How do you
actually vote? What does your office look like? Have you ever met our governor, M. Jodi Rell? Do you know everything about
government? Where did you go to college?
Sincerely,
Mrs. Janis' First Grade
Maple Hill School
Hello to all,
Thank you for the kind words. I am honored to be a pen pal with your
class. You can learn about my job as a State Representative, and I can learn about what you are doing in class, which will
help me do my job better.
Here are my answers to your questions:
1. I love my job! I have the opportunity to help make the laws in
Connecticut, as well as to do things to make Naugatuck better. I also get to help alot of people with problems and to try
and answer questions they have. It is a very cool job!
2. I do not know about the show between the Lions on PBS. Can you
tell me about it?
3. I am 43 years old. I was born on April 15, 1964. I graduated from
Naugatuck High School in 1982
4. The legislators all meet in a huge room the size of your gym to
discuss the different ideas for laws. When the discussion is over, a bell rings and it is announced that there will be a vote.
We then press a button at our desk that records YES or NO. Perhaps you can come visit to watch sometime. The Capitol is a
beautiful place to work.
5. I have met Governor Rell many many times. She is my friend and
a very nice lady.
6. I do not know EVERYTHING about Government, I do not think anybody
can know everything about any job or subject. I work and study hard to always learn more so I can do my job better.
7. I went to college at the University of Connecticut. Go Huskies!
When I was in college I also got to study and travel in places like Poland, Italy, China and Russia.
Now it is time for my question for you. What is your favorite topic
to study in Mrs. Janis class? I know that many of you have different "favorites," so I ask that you all vote on it. The topic
with the most votes wins and will be THE CLASS FAVORITE. Choosing like that is democracy and is an example of how I do my
job.
Thank you for being my pen pal. Have a great day!

Subject: New questions
Dear Kevin,
We have come up with a few more questions.
How are you? How is the Governor?
Have you ever met the President?
Do you push a button to vote? We forgot.
Do you like to vote?
Where where you when the Governor was
making her last speech? Mrs. Janis and Wyatt
saw you on TV. Liam thought that you were
handsome on TV. How many people were
there?
Do you love your job? What is your other job?
Do you know that we collect Box Tops for Education
for our school?
Thank you as always,
Mrs. Janis' Grade One
P.S. When are you coming back to our school? (no rush, we know
you are busy:)
Hello all...
All is well with
me...very very very busy time of year for me.
The Governor is
also doing well. I will see her today, not long after I write this e-mail.
We do have to push
a button to vote. Every vote we make is recorded so that people can decide if they like the way we voted.
It is a great honor
to be able to vote on the laws in CT. I love it.
Many people were
at the Governor's speech, about 350 I would think.
I also work for
a computer company in Naugatuck called NSI.
I do know that
Maple Hill collects box tops, I think that is a great idea.
Hope all is well
with all of you.
