Rusty Blackhaw (Viburnum rufidulum)

This beautiful shrub/small tree has quickly disappeared from the Hill Country due to unscrupulous plant rustlers. It is easy to see why it has attracted so much attention. Rusty Blackhaw is one of our most uncommon and attractive natives. It has glossy, rich green leaves and showy clusters of white flowers in late Spring. In the Fall, the tardily deciduous leaves turn gorgeous shades of red, yellow and orange. Loads of blue/black berries are a favorite treat of resident songbirds.

This plant does well in sun or part shade locations but must have good drainage to thrive. Ask us about our special Rusty Backhaw Virburnums, they are robust clones grown from outstanding parent stock. These individuals were from a wild population that Dan discovered and extensively tested for hardiness, growth habit, and resistance to pests. This is the finest Rusty Blackhaw selection available.

Rusty Blackhaw is deer-resistant but small plants need to be protected from curious browsers.
