St. Louis to Honour its Irish Ancestry by building a large Celtic Cross Monument!

St. Louis Celtic Cross Fund

Recently, I visited my family's plot in Calvary Cemetery.  There I saw that our name has washed off of the monument that was erected in 1882.  When I found out about the Celtic Cross monument fund, I decided that a donation to the monument would be a way to memorialize my family in a way that everyone could see, not just cemetery visitors.  You can join in this effort, too.  It is a great idea!

St. Louis Has its Own Hurling Team!!!

What's more Irish than the sport of "Hurling"?
Here is your opportunity to join other hurling enthusiasts in the Irish-est of sports.
They have formed a league to play in St. Louis and against
clubs in Milwaukee, Chicago and Atlanta. They can always use new members!   Their Web Page has more information. Practices have moved to Saturdays at 2:00 and 3:00 PM at
Northeast Middle School, at I-270 & Ladue Road.

Contact Paul Rohde at hurlingboy_paul@yahoo.com  or call him  for more
info (314-422-2268).

St. Louis Irish Arts Schedule for St. Louis

horizontal line

I don't know of any restaurant that specializes in Irish cuisine. The following places serve Guinness on tap and offer American menus. In Ireland, they would call it "pub grub". The following are my favourites.

Seamus McDaniels
1208 Tamm
Dogtown Area
Phone (314) 645-6337
Seámus'  has good "pub grub" at a reasonable price.  Music is not Irish.
Service is good.

Seamus McDaniels on the Boardwalk
In Winghaven
O'Fallon, MO

New location for Seamus'!
They now serve Smithwicks!
O'Connells Irish Pub
2401 Washington Ave.
Granite City, IL 62040
Phone: (618) 876 0664
A fun place.  Has good inexpensive food.
Owner is Nancy O'Connell

John D. McGurk's Irish Pub
1200 Russell Blvd.
St. Louis (Soulard Area)
Phone: (314) 776-8309
McGurk's has an excellent Irish stew.  Reasonably priced food.  Live traditional Irish music nightly.
Pint of Guinness:  $5.25!!! as of  Jan. 2003
John D. McGurks Irish Pub-O'Fallon, MO
108 S. Main St.

Roddy McCool's
2097 Bentley Plaza
Fenton

Reasonably priced food.  Good fish dinners
Pint of Guinness:  $4.50

Hennessey's Irish Pub
Authentic Irish Pub
Soulard Area
1730 S. 8th St.
Very reasonable food.  Not an "upscale" pub. Needs better ventilation.   Regulars are a bit rowdy - not a family pub.  Good place to go to party with friends

Maggie O'Brien's
2000 Market St.
Next door to Union Station
Phone: (314) 421-1388
Maggie's has a full menu of entrees and appetizers at reasonable prices.  Sometimes has Irish music.
Pint of Guinness: $4.25 as of Jan. 2003

O'Connell's
4652 Shaw
St. Louis
Phone: (314) 773-6600
O'Connell's has a very nice decor.  Food is so-so, service is poor.  Specialty is hamburgers.  Fun place to go for a reasonable lunch or after work gathering.

O'Malley's
1900 Cherokee St.
St. Louis, MO 63118
One of the newest pubs in St. Louis. Food is reasonable.  In the historic Lemp/Cherokee district.

LLywelyn's
4747 McPherson (at Euclid)
Saint Louis
314-361-3003
Not an "Irish" pub exclusively; has a British feel to it, but the food is good, reasonable and the service is good.

~At the University of Missouri-St. Louis:

Eamonn Wall, renowned poet, writer and literary critic has joined the English Department faculty as a Professor in Irish Studies. He is teaching the graduate course "Irish-American Literature" and is developing a "Voices of the Diaspora" course that compares the Irish American experience with that of other American ethnic groups. For a UMSL program, he envisions a multidisciplinary curriculum offering classes in subjects ranging from history, literature and political science to the growing role of Ireland's computer industry in the global economy.

Also joining the UMSL faculty is Gearóid O hAllmhuráin, concertina champion from Clare who is a leading authority on traditional Irish Music and its importance both in Ireland and among Irish Diaspora. One of his first projects is to organize a summer program in Irish music.
