Dustoff

I arrived on my birthday at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas in September 1965. This was the first time I had seen palm trees. I wasn't expecting them in Texas. Eight weeks of MSC Officer Basic was followed by 4 weeks of Medical Supply and Service training. This made me a Field Medical Assistant (MOS 3506).

Only one training event stands out in my memory. There was a poster in the front of each classroom that displayed the lesson and the instructor's name. Today the instructor's name was Lt. Colonel Clapp. He arrived, stood by the podium, and silently looked at us. After several seconds we were starting to become uncomfortable. Then he said in a strong, firm voice "My name is Clapp...". He paused and then continued, " and I've had it all my life!". He had gotten our attention.

Palm tree

December arrived and I was surprised to see some roses still blooming. I was sad to be leaving. I thoroughly enjoyed Fort Sam and San Antonio. The Alamo was wonderful. The River walk was my favorite with the bridges, boat rides, and restaurants. Sadly, most of my photographs have been lost.

At the Fort Sam movie theater, I recall watching a James Garner movie, 36 Hours, set in WWII Germany. Having orders to join the 3rd Armored Division in Germany, I remember a distinct thrill on seeing the German countryside on the screen. Knowing I would be there soon brought a delicious anticipation that's seldom been matched.
