Comments: It has been some time since I visited the 8th. Georgia Infantry web page. You have done a masterful job in your presentation. You do a great service to those who served in the 8th. Georgia Infantry. As a fellow webmaster of several units it is fitting that in this small way we honor those who sacrificed all they had for what they believed in. I tip my kepi to you sir:

Comments: My great great grandfather was in the 65th georgia infantry, and joined that regiment out of Cave Spring. It is referred to as "The Freedmen of Floyd County"and "Smith's Partisan Rangers" before being formed into this regiment. I found a website on the 65th, but would be grateful for any more info. His name was Arthur Smith Ford, and was a 2nd Lieutenant in Co. D&G. He died in a train wreck outside Rome in 1879, and is buried in Cave Spring.

Comments: You have done an excellent job. I can tell years of research went into your website. My Genealogy Site above has a civil war history that many family share. A Family Divided explains some of our history. While we have many photo's of Ellis Men in Union Uniforms, I cannot seem to find one of our kin in a photograph wearing a Confederate Uniform! I remember seeing one and saving it over a year ago, but several crashes and a new Computer later has lost it.

Comments: I am married to Nella Holmes who is a direct descendent of James Edward Holmes, brother of P.B. Holmes (Pierce Butler Holmes) who was a member of the Oglethope contingent that became CO B of the 8th Georgia. Both men were sons of the notable Dr. James Holmes who wrote many stories under the name of Dr. Bullie for the Darien Timber Gazette. Nella has Dr. Holmes' family bible and we have done much research on the Holmes family. One interesting note is that Pierce Butler Holmes was named after his godfather (Pierce Butler) whose grandfather was a signer of the U.S. Constitution for South Carolina. There is more data if you are interested.

Comments: My gggrandfather, James C Carnes, was also a member of the GA 8th infantry, having mustered in in Rome, GA on Feb. 20, 1862. He was wounded on July 4, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg and died from his wounds on August 31, 1863. He is buried at Gettysburg. His brother, Elias G Carnes, was by his side when he was shot and refused to leave him, electing to be taken prisoner so he could be with his brother. Now that is what being a Southerner is all about: devotion to God, the Cause, and family.

Comments: Hi--I am doing research on the confederate army and flag. I am a black woman, and frankly I'm really trying to find out why african-americans are so "touchy" about the flag over the sc state capital. I was under the impression that black soldiers fought under that flag as well...maybe I'm wrong, hence the research. You have a very informative website, but if you could provide more info on the flag and the NAACP reason for controversy I would really appreciate it.

Comments: Attended George "Tige" Anderson memorial service in Anniston, Alabama Saturday. He worked for the city in later life and is buried at Edgemont cemetary. I live forty miles west of Rome. My direct ancestors were in Law's Brigade. My mother's father's father's father is buried at Bethel Baptist cemetary two miles west of the state line in Forney. Co H 48th Alabama 4-62through5-64; I have cousins in Cave Spring who claim Georgia regiment ancestors. Grandpa lived in Fayette County, southwest of Atlanta with his father and mother before he moved to Cherokee County in the 1850's. Interesting to know the 8th Ga had Rome companies. I heard that Anderson worked for the city of Atlanta, also. I also work for the federal government. It's great fun charting a regiments course through the war. You get to learn everything else that goes with it. It is a blessing to have ancestors in a famous brigade like Anderson's. Grandpa started in Jackson's division next to the Stonewall Brigade with his two brothers. He was the middle boy. Their older brother was killed at their first battle (Cedar Mountain) when Winder was killed and Hill saved the day after a repulse involving Winder's left Virginia and Alabama brigades.

Comments: I am absolutely thrilled with your excellent web page. I am a Great Granddaughter of Capt. John Paulden Duke, CO H, 8th Georgia. I could go on forever telling you all the things I would like to share with you . I too have the wonderful 1913 photo of the Vets going to the Reunion. Yes, J.L. Duke (James Lumpkin) was John Paulden's eldest brother. Both of them are buried at Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church on the outskirts of Rome. I have a letter written by Johnny P.'s youngest daughter giving a wonderful description of their family life and accounts of his meeting and marrying her mother (A Virginia Girl) at the close of THE WAR. I do own a copy negative of Capt. Duke in uniform and would be honored if you would want a copy of his image. It was taken back in the 1960's from the original Daguerreotype. I have much more and one of my cousins and I contributed extensive material to the original person (now deceased) who was preparing the text for the BOOK which is soon to be released. I am an active member of Franklin Chapter 14, UDC in Franklin, TN. I am a Georgia native and currently reside in the state. I look forward to your response. Gloria
