Our intention: The greatest benefit may be to discover a place of peace in our gatherings. Feeling comfortable, easeful, and peaceful is the ideal for each and every participant. This is a spiritual opportunity of attunement toward the One and entraining with others. Join us in singing praises of the One with innumerable names! General form: The form is group, or "call and response," singing of simple phrases, usually in Hindi or Sanskrit, with musicians playing traditional instruments, such as the harmonium, tablas, tanpura, cymbals and bells, augmented by anything else that works. The emphasis is on the melody and rhythm. The words are important, as well, but most important is attitude and intention. The aim is cultivation of devotion, peace, and joy, aided by the gathering with others in musical praise of Spirit. Participation: Only minimal musical skill is required for participation; if you like to sing, you are ready for kirtan! Feel free to participate at your own comfort level. Sing as you feel comfortable, as you get the phrases and melodies...or, just sit and enjoy the experience. The music is a yoga - a means of cultivating connection - for the musicians, singers, and observers alike. (See "More Information" for details on chanting.) Most chants will be led by the facilitators, but you may bring your favorite kirtans and instruments, as well. If you wish to lead a chant, please e-mail in advance of the meeting. For those who wish to play any instruments, musicians meet at least 1 hour before the session begins, in order to facilitate tuning and exploration of techniques. (See "Musicians Wanted" for details on instrumentation.) Requirements: None! Also, no fee will be charged for these meetings. We are a fully non-sectarian sangha. Our kirtan leaders and regular participants are devotees of various - or no particular - spiritual traditions.
An interesting note: One Hindu friend has written to me: "You're lucky to be able to chant Kirtans...Naam Kirtan is supposed to be the best way in this Kali Yuga."* This speaks to the power of kirtan! In fact, many traditions emphasize the importance of kirtan as central, or even supreme, among spiritual practices. *[Vedic scholars disagree on whether this is the Kali Yuga or the Dwapara Yuga, based on the available knowledge about Cosmic cycles of space/time. However, chanting kirtan is highly recommended by both schools.] |
