Color Patterns

There are a couple of myths with regard to the color of the giant sea bass. Though once referred to as the "black sea bass" the giant sea bass, when in it's natural habitat actually exhibits several color patterns. It was previously believed that only young fish showed spots, and mature fish were black. We have observed that each individual fish can change from one pattern to another, and that there are three common patterns.

Cleaning Symbiosis

The giant sea bass are often seen with many exoparasites. These parasites are usually found around the face and gill area. We have observed many small and/or juvenile species of fish providing cleaning services to the giant sea bass. In tropical waters cleaning stations are common, though they are not frequently observed in temperate seas.

Some of the giant sea bass have unique physical features or markings. We are creating a photographic catalog of the unique characteristics that can be used to identify individual fish.
