Before I start, if you just want to see a list of the tools & technology that I used, click here. Otherwise... In case you haven't noticed, I'm no graphic artist nor cognitive specialist. That being said, I did start with a general idea of how I envisioned the site to flow. As for the layout of the pages, that kind of grew out of a number of trials between what I wanted and what I could actually do. Being a superhero themed game, I wanted the site to feel comic bookish. I first thought of trying to make each page literally like a comic book with panes and word bubbles, but I'm no artist and the amount of time it would have taken me to do that would have easily seen the next three revisions of BrikWars come and go. As I was trying to figure out how the site would look, I needed to teach myself HTML. I actually knew it a number of years ago, but it has been so long since I actually needed to know the specifics that I was in need of a reference guide. I picked up HTML For the World Wide Web (fourth edition) by Elizabeth Castro. It's excellent. If you're new to HTML or just want a convenient reference guide, I highly recommend it. It is easy to read and doesn't go overboard on the technical side. It covered everything I needed to know about HTML including cascading style sheets (which didn't exist when I first knew HTML). |
