property do not exist because men have made laws. On the
contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and
property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws
in the first place." On Liberty and Faction: "Liberty is to
faction what air is to fire, an ailment without which it
instantly expires. But it could not be less folly to
abolish liberty, which is essential to political life,
because it nourishes faction, than it would be to wish
the annihilation of air, which is essential to animal
life, because it imparts to fire its destructive
agency." |

In the landscape of American politics, it is difficult to find a political party that not only believes in the value of human freedom, but also realizes that change made must be done gradually and with forethought concerning the need for the people to adjust to new ideas. Human freedom cannot be completely unrestricted. Even most anarchists advocate the idea that a person's rights end where another's begin, but even then they ignore the issue of power. Without an arbiter to settle disputes or a justice system to defend civil liberties, unrestricted human freedom becomes a society in which those with the power (via weaponry, brute force, or sheer numbers) to enforce their laws and moral codes will be able to do so over others, effectively removing their liberty. For the most liberty to be possible, the people must give up some of their power to establish a government that will act as the enforcer of their rights as well as execute functions needed by a large nation that are unable to be provided privately. The Founding Fathers realized this. They set about attempting to determine the fine line between preserving human freedom and the tendency of government to undermine it. What resulted was the United States Constitution, a document that created a federal government limited in power and scope so that its ability to infringe upon the rights of the people was severely restricted, that it performed only the necessary functions to maintain the sanctity of the nation and that it had the ability to change should the need arise. In order to further protect the people from possible federal violations of their freedom, the first act of the new Congress was to pass the first ten Amendments to the Constitution, making the Bill of Rights the cornerstone of American liberty. But the federal government today has drifted from the provisions of the Constitution. Instead of going through the official process of passing Amendments to change the Constitution when needed, the federal government is merely passing legislation that is either not expressly allowed under the language of the Constitution or directly violates the intent of the document. Even though some of these violations have been done with good intentions, they are violations nonetheless. The federal government should be made to strictly follow the rules outlined by the Constitution, else we might as well admit that the document is just a farce and has no real power, and that our government is actually allowed to do anything it wants. Either our government is made to follow the Constitution properly, or else we the people are effectively giving up our freedoms to the State. Therefore, the Constitutionalist Party seeks to improve America and preserve the freedom of the people by supporting a closer adherence to the Constitution as well as promoting ideas and policies that will realistically improve the state of human liberty in the United States.
