BAS wins again! The winter 2007 quarterly drawing for the logged NSN events yielded Wilderness Astronomy as one of the 5 winning selections. See the May 2007 Barnard Star for the announcement details (http://bas.chattanooga.net/html/barnardstar2007.htm)

Jan 9, 2007 letter from NSN

"Over 120 clubs qualified for the Night Sky Network Award Pins this year! That means that they logged more than five events in 2006 where Night Sky Network resources were used... We would especially like to recognize the top 10 clubs who held the most events last year: Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit (131 events)
Astronomical Society of Northern New England of ME (126 events)
Westminster Astronomical Society, Inc. of MD (98 events)
San Antonio Astronomical Association (89 events)
Southwest Florida Astronomical Society, Inc. (86 events)
Von Braun Astronomical Society of Alabama (73 events)
North Houston Astronomy Club (59 events)
Barnard-Seyfert Astronomical Society of TN (47 events)
Morgan County Observatory Foundation of WV (38 events)
Barnard Astronomical Society of TN (35 events)
Well done everyone who contributed to these astounding numbers!"

The remarkable thing is that we are a small club with only 50 members.

October 2006 Proud to announce that I have been selected, together with my club (BAS), to serve on the advisory committee for the development of the NSN kit, Our Changing Universe<.I> due for release early 2008.

July 2006 Announcement: BAS Wins a Solarscope. See the congratulatory email and the pdf download of the winning log. (The probabi;ity of random selection was less than 1%- 5/600).

"TO: Barnard Astronomical Society

John and Victor:

Congratulations!  Your club has won the Night Sky Network award for this quarter: the award-winning Solarscope!

Winners were selected at random from among over 600 events logged on the Network website from April 1, 2006 through June 31, 2005.  The award isdonated by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

Your winning event was “SMAS picnic at TAO”. (With additional kudos to John for how he was able to modify the presentation to keep the attention of a younger crowd for such an extended period of time! Great job!)...

Again, we congratulate you on your dedication to astronomy outreach!

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) may get a redeeming mission after all in Spring 2008. The selected crew for this mission, STS-125, was announced October 31, 2006.

*July 20, 2006:Poetry Event at Hunter Museum (http://www.huntermuseum.org/), Chattanooga, TN. Rhyme N Chatt poets will recite poetry stimulated by celebrated art work. Among other works, I will share, "Blue Sepulcher" after the work of William Morris, "Artifact Still Life," 1990.

*June 17, 2006: My poetic composition, "New Holland 555," a poetic eulogy, took 2nd place in the 4th Annual Slampoze Poetry Contest in Chattanooga, TN. The event was sponsored by Rhyme N Chatt. (This poem received great reviews from celebrated Rutgers University poet, Eva Shockley, during the Spring 2006 Meecham's Writers Conference).

Lectures and other activities, including PoeticWord Ministries, in the arts and sciences are recorded on my collegiate website:

Calendar of Arts & Science Sept 2005 - Apr 2006

*"Lunatic Shadow," a surrealistic poem about the lunar eclipse, will be reprinted in the presitgious "Astronomy Calendar" by Guy Ottewell in the 2007 issue (the poem first appeared in the Thrift Poetic Arts Journal, Decemeber 2004).

MASP 2005: Another successful Mid Atlantic Star Party in the first week in November near Robbins, NC. "Longfellow's Mars" was shared as well as some of my astronomical poetry celebrated earlier.

*I am the featured guest of Friends of Science on Thursday, October 27, 2005 at 7 pm in basement of Lundy Science Building at Hiwassee College. My lecture, "Solar System Dynamics," is open to all.

*StarFest 2005 at Bays Mountain Preserve October 21-23:
I will present a short talk on "Cometary Parallax"

*Radio Astronomy, Journal of the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers (May/June 2005) features a summary by the author of SARA 2005 Conference lecture, "Cavity Waves in Astrophysical and Ionospheric Plasmas."

*Because of my nuclear and plasma physics background, a fellow Baltimorian contacted me for expert advice on the scientific feasibility of equipment used in the Ghostbusters movie for a book he was writing. For fun, I accepted the assignment. Vince was gracious to cite my unedited thoughts and credentials in his recently released book:

Ghost Tech, Vince Wilson, Chapter 10: "Who Ya Gonna Call?" Just For Fun: The Science of Ghostbusters!, Whitechapel Productions Press, Decatur, IL, May 2005
(ISBN 1-892523-39-6)

*"Poetry Under the Stars," at Tamke-Allan Observatory Saturday August 6, 2005 was a successful free public cultural/astronomy event:

Program of Poetry and Music (7 p.m.)

Open mic poetry and song followed featured artists:

Dr. Art Smith, UTK Faculty English Department, distinguished poet and two time Pushcart Award winner delighted the crowds and

John C. Mannone, TAO Visiting Professor of Physics and Astronomy, shared his free verse astronomy compositions

Some of the scheduled activities were not possible due to overcast skies:

Student Art Exhibits
Astronomy Lectures
Solar Observing (6 p.m. to sunset)
Star Gazing
Telescope and Binocular Viewing
Facility Tour
Door Prizes
Refreshments

(Visit www.roanestate.edu/obs/ for a map to Tamke-Allan Observatory in Rockwood, TN or contact Dr. David Fields at (865) 882-4533)

*SARA 2005 Annual Conference June 19-22
NRAO Green Bank, WV

A successful conference culminating in a tour on the GBT (for a few lucky ones). I presented a lecture on "Radio Astronomy with Cavity Waves in Astrophysical and Ionospheric Plasmas." This is the first in a series of lectures. It had a heavy concentration on Schumann Resonances.

*Tennessee Spring Star Party, Fall Creek Falls State Park, March 11-13, 2005 (free). If cloudy, I may also compliment an already excellent program with my talk, "Messier: Marathon of Wonders."

*Consulting Assignment in Charlotte, NC is regretfully over. All good things must come to an end. Please email me (CONTACT page) at my TN home for communication after Feb 2005.

*Solutions posted to Astronomy Word Puzzle called Poetic uniVerse (Dec 1, 2004 (see "Educational Puzzles").

*Sky and Telescope magazine features "Exploring the Radio Sky" by founder and current VP of SARA, Jeff M. Lichtman (Jan 2005 Issue, p. 127-131). And, it mentions the plasma bubble research (however, the work is for Earth, not Jupiter).

*A successful talk on spectral analysis techniques in amateur radio astronomy and update our researh effort on plasma bubbles was presented at the SARA Regional Conference in Puerto Rico (Dec 10-12, 2004). It has paved the way for some corroborative research using magnetometer fluctuations.

*"Lunatic Shadow", a surrealistic poem about the lunar eclipse (27 Oct 04) and "Word Pictures", a poem on biblical astronomy, has been published by the literary publication, Thrift Poetic Arts Journal, in Jan 2005. Also, "Star Party" will appear in Frontage Road (May 2005).
