Sept. 30- Oct. 4: Grape Festival Fairgrounds, Lodi
Angels Camp, Tuttletown, Rawhide, Shaws Flat, Columbia, Jamestown, Sonora. All town names that conjure up pictures of the California Gold Rush of 1849, and logging in the Sierra Nevada from the mid 19th to the early 20th Century. On April 23, sixty five California State Club rigs assembled at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds RV Park in Sonora for fun in an area steeped in history. At the entrance to the fairgrounds we were greeted by a beautifully preserved Shay (gear drive) steam locomotive used early in the 20th Century in Sierra logging. This led to the theme of our weekend, the Wild West. Members were encouraged to dress in western attire, and there was a table decoration contest with a western theme.
Thursday evening dinner was a wonderful example of the creativity of our members, as we dined potluck on a variety of salads prepared by members and ham served by the Executive Board, followed by the opening ceremony of our weekend. A cribbage tournament, dominos, Mexican Train, and several tables of poker capped off the evening. In addition, many of our members assembled around various rigs for visits with friends old and new.
On Friday we had a number of activities. The morning began with a great breakfast by the Big Valley Drifters. Sue Chambers, our second vice president, organized a scramble golf tournament for some of our more intrepid sports men and women, while others went to a golf clinic. The golfers enjoyed their foray, but they came back fairly damp as a rainstorm crossed their path. In the afternoon we had a number of other activities, including a meeting of Chapter presidents, a washer toss tournament, Chapter meetings, a dinner theater in town for some of our members. And of course before dinner there was happy hour. Friday dinner was prepared and served by the Oddfellows of Sonora. And after dinner we had western line dancing with a professional instructor/caller to teach the steps of each dance. Almost everyone who participated quickly got the hang of it and had a great time, even yours truly who did the mirror image of each step. What a blast! And after the dancing there was bingo, dominos, and several tables of poker (in the true spirit of the old west saloons).
Saturday began with another wonderful breakfast by the Golden Bear Winnies. Shortly thereafter we had a meeting of all members of the California State Club who were at Sonora. There also was a Spring Festival in Sonora, which a number of our members enjoyed. Others went to a first-class railroad museum in Jamestown, or a trip to Columbia, a gold rush town that has maintained itself in a 19th century time warp. Saturday afternoon there was beanbag baseball and washer toss. Dinner was preceded by happy hour, followed by a tri-tip barbeque from a local barbeque emporium, served by the Executive Board. After dinner awards were presented for the best table decorations. The judging committee said that all the chapters outdid themselves with the western theme, and they had a difficult time determining a winner. In the end, they decided on a tie between the Chardonnay Travelers and the Fresno Floaters. In reality all the chapters were winners. Awards also were presented for the "champion" golf trophies for the winning and second place teams, and for "closest to the hole", winning and runner-up teams of beanbag baseball, the men and women winners of washer toss, and the winners of the cribbage tournament. Modesty prevents me from naming the winner. And again after the awards there was bingo, dominos, and several tables of poker.
Our typical Sunday morning is a continental getaway breakfast, as members drop in for sustenance before hooking up tow-cars, pulling up the jacks, disconnecting from utilities, and heading home. Many members told us that this outing was one of the best in a long time. Everyone who couldn't come missed out on a great time.
The California State Club rally will be held at the Grape Festival Fairgrounds in Lodi, CA, September 30 &endash; October 4. Lodi is in the midst of the largest grape producing area in the US, and although the harvest should be about complete by the rally, there are a myriad of wineries that allow a sample of some of their products. We also have entertainment planned, including a group that has performed as the warm-up for a number of very well known vocalists one evening and Karaoke the next evening. Sandy Schipper will lead a two-day class on decorating a sweatshirt with patch work, appliqué, and other forms of handwork. There will be golf, tours, and all of the fun games that we normally have in the afternoons and evenings. Ya'll come, hear! Registration materials will be mailed to all members of the CA State Club. Others can contact State club President Connie Norton. And we will put registration material on the CA State Club website. The Grape Festival fairground has water and electricity at sites, and a dump station.
