Villages in Chautauqua County (OK, some are just wide spots in the road) |
|||||
Back in the early days, settlements sprang up wherever people had transportation. Of course, existing waterways made for easier transportation, so a lot of small settlements developed around Chautauqua Lake. These settled areas were more often used in the non-winter months because travel on the lake was impossible once the ice began to form. Roads, crude by our standards connected the areas, but probably the most influential change in transportation was the development of a rail system that circled the lake and connected to the nationwide rail system. The cards in this series often feature rail or steamboat transportation, and in that respect are also connected to the general lake views on another CD. Generally, the tour begins in West Ellicott and goes up the west side of the lake and returns to Fluvanna.
