I've divided my Jamestown cards into three
sections to make them a bit
more manageable. The Jamestown cards are generally named by
street address.
This section
consists of general views of
Jamestown's streets and buildings, except those that would be
considered institutional/government, or (generally) those located on
Third Street or Main Street. There may be some duplication.
Jamestown, New York is
in the most southwestern county of the state: Chautauqua.
One
of the most prominent features of the county is the long narrow Lake
Chautauqua
that runs roughly northwest to southeast.
What
follows
is
not a Chamber of Commerce view of the city. Rather, it is the
result
of collecting of photos, postcards, and history by an
ex-patriate.
There is no attempt to gloss over Jamestown's problems that are evident
in some of the views you will see. A home town is like a
family:
you care about it in spite of any shortcomings that you see.
Several
Jamestowners
have gained national fame: Lucille Ball, Roger Tory Peterson,
Natalie
Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs, Irv Noren. Here's where many of them
grew up.
This section includes
transportation. A terrific site for more information about
steamers and trolleys can be found at the Trolley Car
#93 Restoration Project, or by clicking on Jamestown Trolleys at
the left.
