SOUTH CAROLINA

On December 20, 1860, South Carolina became the 1st State to secede from the Union and on April 12, 1861 became the 1st State to fire upon the Union. South Carolina, unlike the other Southern States that issued their own currency to finance the War, relied on taxes and bonds of which the Bank of South Carolina was the agent. In turn, the Bank issued currency for circulation.
