OBERT ESTES, JR.: The info on Robert and Dorothy came from Stackpole's "The History of Durham". Here is some additional info: "...it is said by antiquarians that Albert Azo, II, Marquis of Liguria, born about A.D. 1097 was founder of the houses of Este and Brunswick. The former was conspicuous in Italy as late as the middle of the 18th century about which time its direct line failed in the death of Hercules III, he being of the 22nd generation from Azo II. Such is the foundation of this ancient house. The name Este is said to have been derived from a colony planted in the 7th century of Rome, about fifteen miles south of the city of Padua, and called Ateste, or Este, which latter name the marquises of Liguria assumed in the early part of the 14th century. The name Este is plural and is used to represent the whole family. Tradition has it that the name was brought into England by one Francesco, natural son of marquis Leonnello, and who went first to Bergundy and escaped thence into England, and afterward made his home in that country. The period of his life lay between 1434 and 1444. The immigrant Estes family here about to be considered begins with Robert and Dorothy Estes, of Dover, England, whose ancestry has not been clearly settled, but concerning whose descendants there is no uncertain tradition..."Children of R

ICHARD ESTES: Richard Estes, son of Robert and Dorothy Estes of Dover, England came to New England in 1684. They lived in Lynn and Salem, Mass. "...said to have been born in the 3 month, 1647 and ...lived in England until the 11 day, 7 month, 1684...believed to have left the Downs, in England, in September 1684, arrived in Boston, in the latter part of November, and soon went to Great Island, now Portsmouth, to join his brother Matthew, who had preceded him about two years...he was a weaver...in 1686, he had a deed of 60 acres of land in Kittery, ME, and in 1692-3, was in Salem, MA, where in 1694 he is called "sleymaker" or a maker of weavers' reeds...In 1695, he was of Lynn, MA, and bought lands there...he appears to have become possessed of many tracts of land in Lynn and Salem and spent the later years of his life in the town last mentioned, where in 1726-7 he deeded lands to his son Benjamin...he was of the Society of Friends, and a very devout man, upright in his daily walk... he and Elizabeth had eleven children..."Notes for E
LIZABETH BECK: "...of Great Island, born 8 day, 11 month, 1663, probably a daughter of Henry Beck, who was an inhabitant of Dover in 1642..."One report says Elizabeth was born January 13, 1632/33. This is not likely since it would make her well over 50 at the time of the birth of her children.

MARY8 ESTES (EDWARD7, RICHARD6, ROBERT5, ROBERT4, HENRY3, SYLVESTER2, NICHOLAS1 EASTES) was born September 29, 1743. She married NICHOLAS VARNEY, son of EBENEZER VARNEY and ELIZABETH HANSON. He was born February 21, 1738/39, and died November 28, 1764 in Falmouth, Cumberland ME.Notes for N
ICHOLAS VARNEY: Stackpole's History of Durham: 'After living a few years in Falmouth he purchased, in 1782, lot No. 17 of Stephen Hart in Royalsborough. Hart's buildings had just been burned and Varney built his house on the hill southwest of John Varney's blacksmith-shop. The house is now occupied by his great-gradson, George E. Varney. He belonged to the Society of Friends and their rules prohibited any active part in war. They protested against all taxes, any part of which was to meet war expenses. Since it was impossible to discriminate in tax-bills what portion was for war, some of the Friends refused to pay any taxes at all. When the collector of Royalsborough called on Nicholas Varney, he persistently refused payment of the amount assessed upon him. Consequently the shiriff came and seized a new milch-cow, and sought also to take away her young calf with her. The boys, unterrified by the officer's badge and ignoring the spirit of the Quaker principle of non-resistance, mixed those calves up so that the officer was unable to decide which was the right one; and finding it difficult to catch and impossible to drive any one, he went away with the cow alone. The animal was sold, and the next time the officer came that way he brought the balance of the sale money remaining after the deduction of the tax-bill. Neither husband nor wife would touch the polluted currency, and the officer could relieve himself of the responsibility for the money only by laying it upon the high shelf at a corner of the room. There the money remained untouched for many months. When the next year the officer came round for another collection, his demand was met only by an allusion to what he had done the previous year and the statement that the money he had placed on the shelf then was still there. The officer found it so and withdrawing from it the amount required, returned the balance to its former position. It proved sufficient for the third year also.'Children of M

She married (1) SAMUEL CLOUGH6, son of JOHN CLOUGH. He was born 1752 in Brentwood NH, and died January 10, 1799. She married (2) JEDEDIAH HALL September 28, 1815 in Litchfield.Notes for S
ARAH ESTES: Sarah Estes was born at North Yarmouth, Maine on April 16, 1752. In the "Records of the Woman's Monthly Meeting of friends for Herpswell and Falmouth" in the list of marriages from 1751 to 1790 on page 3, "at our Monthly Meeting held at Falmouth ye 23th of ye 3rd mo. 1772 the Preparative Meeting Cald upon their appeared for Falmouth Hope Winslow and Sarah Goddard on account from Herpswells whereas Sarah Cloof (Clough) has gone Contrary to the good orders used amongst friends on the account of her marring with one not of our Society and in so ding hath Denyd Membership with us Sarah Cloof hath sent in a paper to this meeting by nay of acknolegment friends refers it for further Consideration ." The date when Samuel and Sarah were married is not on record. Sarah's mother, Patience (Carr) was very prominent in the Quaker meetings. Samuel Clough died after making his will on Jan. 10. 1799. The Friends Records are stored in Portland. Maine. Since the names of the children are recorded in these ancient books, so faded that only with the aid of a magnifying glass can they be read, Samuel and Sarah must have been forgiven by the Society.Notes for S
AMUEL CLOUGH: Samuel Clough of Durham, Maine is reported to have come there from Berwick, Maine, a town where he met Quakers who were moving from Massachusetts to the vicinity of Yarmouth, Maine. Since his brother, Amos, possibly another brother, Richard, and their Welch relatives were already in North Yarmouth, there is reason to believe that Samuel of Brentwood went to Durham, Maine. Evidently a former group of Quakers had already occupied farms in the vicinity of Durham, including North Yarmouth because the girl whom Samuel married was born in that. Doubtless Samuel visited his relatives there and met Sarah Estes. A Samuel Clough came from Berwick, Maine to Durham, Maine in the second group of settlers who were Quakers. Samuel and Edward Estes bought land in Durham then called Royalsborough, on June 10, 1771, lot 16 was owned by Samuel and lot I j by Joseph Estes, the brother of the girl whom Samuel married. Samuel did not live to see his family grow to maturity, and he died at the age 47 years. His sons became men of whom he would have had reason to be proud and his descendants in later generations became distinguished citizens.Children of S
