VIETNAM JOURNEYS
THE PEOPLE
I served in Vietnam with the US Army from August 1968 to August 1969. Since then I have made three trips back (1994, 1995, 1996). These are some of the people I met along the way during these return trips. All of my trips were arranged by Gerry Schooler of Viet Tour Expeditions--he has developed great contacts in-country and can get you just about anywhere. My brother went with me on my 1996 trip back. He didn't make it to Vietnam during the war but served with the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany as an FO.

| One day, during my 1994 trip, I spent the morning
exploring the ambush site of a French convoy at the Chu Dreh Pass
in 1954. This was along a stretch of Highway 14 north of Ban Me Thuot . By afternoon
it was extremely hot. We spent some time at this young boy's house where his mother
sold fresh "squeezed" iced sugar cane juice. |

My first night in Nha Trang in 1994, found me walking along the beach. This happy teenager was so excited to meet her first American. |

I would have never expected to see anyone wearing
a hat like this in downtown Hanoi. Later that same day I had lunch at Uncle Sam's
Cafe. Unbelievable. |
